IT’S A WALK-OFF…at Black Lodges

13 February 2009, 19.56 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Against his better judgment, Steven Vogel asked me to take part in a fashion showdown called “It’s a WALK-OFF!!!!” over at Black Lodges. My competitors were my brother and Ryan Willms of h(y)r collective. The theme I chose was “Après-Shred,” which of course is French for “after shredding.” Hit the jump for a rundown of my ‘fit, and see what I’m up against here. Who do you think takes the crown?

Red Bull Snowscrapers

06 February 2009, 17.10 | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment »

I hit up the Red Bull Red Snowscrapers event in NYC last night, but unfortunately I don’t have that much to report on account of the fact that it was “freezing brass monkeys,” as they say in the olde country, and I am not built for such conditions. Red Bull may give you wings, but it could not furnish me with more appropriate footwear in my time of need.

I did catch the first round of the finals, and it was pretty incredible to see Shaun White and Co. stomping tricks in the same spot where I usually do some CALESTENTICS during a run. And though the air wasn’t quite as big as I expected, the jump was pretty unbelievable. When I turned the corner on my Mongoose and saw the ramp lit up in the distance for the first time, I got so amped I thought I was Nigel Sylvester for a second. Thankfully I came to my sense before trying to cross FDR Drive while popping handle bar spins.

Anyway, as I say I couldn’t brave the cold for too long, and my hands were too numb to really take pictures of the boarders, but I snagged a few quickies just to give you a sense of how they set it up. I would have loved to have seen what kind of crowd stuck around in the frozen tundra for the Anthrax concert…kind of regret not checking that out.

TGIF?!

In my life, all days are similar. Weekends just involve doing fewer things alone. Still, my biological clock is programmed just like everyone else’s, and it always starts beeping at around 5PM on a friday.

Enjoy the weekend…one time for DC, mayne!

On Corporate Patronage…

28 January 2009, 23.01 | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 comments »

Recently, I wrote a piece for Black Lodges to share my thoughts on corporate patronage and the deluge of “Brand x Artist” collaborations that floods this little space we call “streetwear.” You can find it here. I hope you’ll enjoy it and that you’ll contribute your own ideas and feelings to the discussion. Many thanks to Steven for giving me the forum.

A perfect gift for the biggest bamma you know.

Old School Fun

27 January 2009, 06.47 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Over the weekend I hit up Hartford and Old Lyme, CT, to parlay with some old friends and enjoy the outdoors a bit. Even though a lot of bamma ish goes down in New York, a Friday night out in Hartford reminded me that it could be a lot worse, and I should be thankful that I at least have the option of going to bars that aren’t terrible. But that’s neither here nor there, because the real wonders of Connecticut are in the ‘burbs. I went for an awesome snow run in Penwood State Park, played indoor mini golf, and did some insane sledding. Hit the jump for some pics.

Last weekend, my brother and I embarked on a long-awaited adventure with one question in mind: Does Manhattan have good nachos? The results are forthcoming, but I thought I’d tickle your appetite with some pics of the prime suspects in our investigation. Stay tuned…big tings a gwain at Nacho Hunters!

The Best Pants in the World

17 January 2009, 02.42 | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment »

Throughout my life, I have been a pretty casual dude. During high school, my style could best be described as “sports casual,” mostly because I deftly sidestepped the dress code’s collared shirt stipulation by exclusively wearing European soccer jerseys. In college, I almost always wore jeans that were way too big and LRG hoodies, which probably explains why I could only convince unsavory females to kiss me. In the past year, I have undergone a bit of a sartorial evolution, garnering praise from friends and family for “looking much better,” but I’ve still maintained my signature devotion to casual comfort.

(Needless to say, I ganked this photo from Digital Gravel)

Perhaps the most glorious item in my developing wardrobe is a pair of Twelve Bar ‘Higgins’ cuorduroy pants. Ne’er has a pair of pants fit been so well-fitting or struck such a perfect balance between respectable and mad casual. What’s cool about these cords is that the washed-out coloration of the legs almost makes them look like jeans until you get close and see the pattern. Recently, I was paying a visit to my university’s alumni clubhouse, when suddenly this ornery looking librarian rolled up to me and started inspecting me as if I were some sort of street urchin that had wandered in from the street. “Are those jeans?” she asked. Was I back in high school?! She was trying to get me on the old jeans rule like some sort of modern-day fascist! What was she going to do if they were? Burn them with all the good books?

“No,” I replied calmly. “They are just INCREDIBLY FRESH CORDS.”

As I made my way to a comfy leather chair, I left her to eat her words with a slice of humble pie.

So thank you, Twelve Bar. Thank you for allowing me to once against thwart minor authority figures with extremely comfortable gear.

Doin’ a Deal!

Been meaning to post this for ages. “Pure jokes,” as my cousin in Clapham would say.
