Frank The Butcher

Ralph Folarin

15 May 2011, 21.02 | Posted in Friends, Music, The Butcher Block, Video | No comments »

Wale introduced himself to the masses at an interesting time in Hip-Hop. While using the web wasn’t a new way for artists to break music, they were beginning to leverage online popularity and turning it into major label opportunities.

Wale joined Drizzy and Cudder on the trip from the farm league minors to the big show. Drake joined Lil Wayne’s Young Money collective while Cudi linked with Kanye’s Good Music team — both affiliations proved to be the fuel needed to kick both careers into high gear.

Mr. Folarin did it on his own and for the most part, on his own terms.

If phase one was internet assisted independence and phase two was signing on the dotted line, then phase three is joining the juggernaut movement that is Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group. Different platform but the same message delivered with invigorated enthusiasm.

As unlikely as it may have seemed at the time, Wale’s new partnership has proven to be as fruitful as it is exciting. ‘Play Your Part’, ‘Pandemonium’, ‘600 Benz’ and ‘By Any Means’ make it clear that Wale and friends, Meek Mill, Pill and of course Rozay, are on a quest to own the summer.

Maybach Music’s ‘Self Made’ due May 23rd

Wale invited me down to a studio session while in Boston where I interviewed him and Black Cobain for Karmaloop TV. Interview coming soon.

Good Wood x The Butcher’s Block

You ever had a good idea? Probably not as good as this one.

My good friend Chris Lee from CtotheJL and Good Wood blessed the kid (literally…) with 3 exclusive laser engraved Jesus pieces. Now, I’ve had these for a few weeks but been hadn’t had the chance to post them— I’m usually faster than that!

Peep the ultra limited red joint— fire (not in a sacrilegious way obviously)…

Hit Good Wood and CtotheJL for the scoop on how you could be saved.

Thanks Chris!

De La Soul: 20 Year Anniversay Tour

21 August 2009, 02.57 | Posted in Friends, Music, The Butcher Block | No comments »

The legendary De La Soul are on tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album “3ft High and Rising”. I had the pleasure of catching the show and hanging with the crew while they were at Showcase Live in Foxboro MA. Of course they killed it especially during the performance of “Rock Co Kane Flow”. Big shouts to my man Brian Coleman and Pos.

Depart From Me Show – Harpers Ferry

02 August 2009, 18.18 | Posted in Friends, Music, The Butcher Block | No comments »

Cage’s “Depart from Me” tour came through Boston on Friday which features my homeboy Yak Ballz and was opened by my brother E The Real.

Yak Ballz has been touring in support of Cage’s new album and has been tearing it down rocking classics, currents and I even heard him flip a couple of instrumentals (bodied an RJD2 beat!). Yak has just put up his new site YakBallz.net where be blogs about his travels and day to day stuff. He has an upcoming EP on Def Jux called “Gas Galaxy” with the title track available for free on his site.

Guess what? Yak has a Cannon G10 too. You know what kind of conversations camera nerds have? Shutter speed, ISO settings and controlling level of flash! This camera is fuckin ill.  Above pic is a product of messing with settings I never heard of…

w Yak and Cage – Weathermen Album coming soon.

You all know Paul Mighty. Here’s the science on him— If I am considering robbing a bank, before I even verbalize it, he has a mask on waiting for me in the car. Its scary how on point he is.

My brother E The Real opened up for Yak and Cage rocking joints off of the new Nite People album. He had the crowd totally zoned into what he was doing. It was crazy! E’s is a genius but not in the weird “rain man” way. New music on the way!!

I know you know this guy!!

Family: Masspike Miles

My brother and Concepts family, Masspike Miles has been holding down Boston forever. Miles is now down with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music and has been reppin Boston and Concepts all over the world. Literally. From Miami to Columbia and everywhere in between. Miles was down in Miami for Memorial Day weekend doing shows with his Maybach team and the boss himself, Ricky Rawss. Peep the video below with Miles rockin our brand new block letter fitted fresh out the box. Download his new mixtape “Pursuit Of Happiness” here.

Put you on: Smoothe Da Hustler

The money stasher, gun blastin’ razor slasher-

Sometimes in Hip-Hop, something great flies by like Halley’s Comet but instead of just missing Earth, it makes an impact. It crashes, changes the delicate balance of our environment but eventually breaks down and disappears. In 1996, I heard something that I would never forget by the name of “Broken Language”. Smoothe Da Huster hailed from Brownsville Brooklyn and hit the ground running with a new style and a strong crew.

I have no doubt if he had continued with the momentum he had at the peak of his popularity, Smoothe would have continued to make some of the best music coming out of Brooklyn. Da Hustler with his younger brother Trigger The Gambler, DV Alias Christ and the rest of the “Next Level Click” embodied Brooklyn somewhere between the Boot Camp Click and Biggie, and were arguably neck and neck (and at each other’s throats at the time) with M.O.P.

Nothing is new under God’s sun but sometimes you can take just enough from the greats and combine the ingredients in a way that has never been heard before. He had the confidence of legendary BK king (Asiatic Nobodies Equal), Big Daddy Kane, the street narratives of G Rap but the balls to experiment lyrically like a Redman with the vocal clarity of KRS-One and the loyalty to his crew like the early Wu-Tang era.

Homage has been paid to the classic “Broken Language” by a few artists but none hold a candle to Ill Bill’s “Cult Leader” off the Non Phixion album “The Future is Now”. Peep the first few bars below:

“The cult leader, the war-monger, armed with four high-powered
firearm barometers; I visited Andromeda
The human cloner, the donate to my fam organ donor
The morbid odor of corpses lowered, the coroner
The cult leader, result needer, the skull and bones bleeder
The chrome heater, the soul eater, the tome reader
The cloak and dagger magnum packer;
convert star systems to active vacuum
The illest shit since Manson had goons…”

Smoothe Da Hustler made a tremendous impact on me as a fan and has earned a place an the Hip-Hop history books.

Go find Smoothe Da Hustler’s “Once Upon a Time in America” and Trigga’s The Gambler’s unreleased Def Jam debut “Life’s a 50/50 Gamble”.

Real recognize real. Download joints below and the Broken Language lyrics are posted for your reading pleasure… learn em, you’ll be quizzed.

No… the Queens Noreaga…

Nore came through town with the homies from Brand Nation. Big shouts to Alex and J. Landlord.  “Jose Louis Gotcha” has the illest stories… Like the one when he had to piss so he picked a building that someone he knew lived in, then with in minutes, 17 police cars and 4 dead bodies…. Ill. Ask him to tell you!

Peep Nore’s new single “Shoulders Move” featuring Jim Jones. Peep Nore’s 57th Ave blog here.

You might think my camera  flash was acting up… nope, that’s smoke.

The “Noreport” is no joke.
