Bacardi Visita

06 August 2009, 15.00 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Musical Heritage…

When People think of Bacardi they think of cocktails, which is not wrong at all! But next to the cocktails there has been a very important element that goes side by side with Bacardi; Music! Since the early days of Bacardi, in the 1920’s, the family have been supportive to local artists and their music. They didn’t just invite artists to come play at the many parties, but they also gave them a chance to record in the studio. Sometimes this artists were rejected for what so reason at record companies. A good example is Celia Cruz who got rejected by a record company because she wasn’t ‘pretty’ enough. Fortunately she got adopted by the Bacardi family and the rest is history………

Times have changed, music has changed, but the idea to give people a stage to show their talent is something Bacardi didn’t let go. So therefore they came up with the concept of Visita. A party where people can get good cocktails en good music. Not only from known artists but also from local talented people, who get a chance!

Gummbah

Gummbah is one of the most hilarious people around. His drawings have let me laugh my pants off for a good 10 years now. He makes these very absurdist images that are very rude but next level funny. A while ago he decided to translate part of his work in English. At first I was kind of sceptic cause it’s so hard to translate this type of humour. But I must say he did a pretty good job. Check out his site here and go buy that book.

POP IN POP OUT

28 July 2009, 18.21 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

This is the story of the Amsterdam summer hang-out of 2009.

If you happen to be in town this week make sure to drop by at the Pop Up Cafe.

The Pop-Up Café is a temporary exhibition that will take place from June 6 until August 2 at Meneer de Wit Gallery in Amsterdam. Created by Eline Mul and Karolien Buurman,
it’s a place that looks and functions as a café. A place where you can socialize, drink coffee, experience art, read books & attend events, all within the pop-up theme.
Imagine foldable stools, paper walls, pop-up ceramics, one-off events, a pop-up bookstore, how-to lectures, dinners & brunches &c.
The Pop-Up Café is an exhibition & café during the day, with lectures, presentations, movies, dinners, music and parties during the evening and night.
This week is your last chance to attend all the fun!

And best of all Patta will host this Friday’s closing party!

Art of Darkness

06 May 2009, 23.59 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

We from Honorable People are very fond of openings. First there’s the free drinks – although we advice everyone to stay clear of the red wine – which in times of crisis is a true blessing. Secondly we feel good when we do something that involves us having to be social and mingle instead of hiding in the DJ booth with headphones on and barely speaking to anyone (this might also be struck and replaced by ‘getting shitfaced beyond decency and drooling on complete strangers while slurring inaudible sweet nothings’). Thirdly we confess we like art. With a capital A. But so far we’ve missed all the big exhibitions we wanted to go see (Pipilotti and Vibskov) this year. Which is why openings of friends and friends of friends is often the only way to get us some decent art-food for the brain. It also helps if the Art to be seen involves starkly designed invites and uneasiness in the work itself. We’re suckers for a nice Universe type and subliminal satanism.

Anyhoo this ranting just serves to lure you all to the following vernisages:

Thursday May 2007 // Offspring 2009

De Ateliers is an independent artists’ institute which is run by visual artists. It focuses on the artistic development of young, talented artists from within the Netherlands and abroad. Offspring 2009 is the forth in a series of exhibitions organized by De Ateliers each year in May. The show includes work by twelve young visual artists who are concluding their two year working period at the post graduate studio.

Saturday May 9 // Darkness Visible

Serieuze Zaken Studioos presents the exhibition by one of our favorite Amsterdam Swedes and WESC activists Pär Strömberg – Darkness Visible. The title derives from John Milton’s description of hell in the epic poem Paradise Lost and is also the title of William Styrons’ memoir of madness that has inspired Pär Strömberg’s work during the last 10 years since his graduation at the Rietveld Academy. His works are a registration of the landscapes of his native country Sweden, both physical and psychological. Refering to the title of the show, Strömberg is influenced by the mysteries of the occult. His work reflects the dark in a way that we see it illuminated, sometimes by unnatural and, sometimes by natural light. Lately Strömberg has been working in Sweden and in Los Angeles, first at Raid as artist in Residence. He also had group shows with Robert Berman Gallery and Sixspace.

Have A Bad Day

30 March 2009, 21.19 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

A while ago my favorite Canuck send me a link to Bad Day, saying I would be into to it.

Turns out, as always, he was right.

Bad Day is a Toronto arts magazine published quarterly and featuring the works and features on todays most relevant artists.

So true, ’cause their Spring issue, which will be out this Wednesday, April 1st, features our “own” Parra, who’s currently in LAlaland, working on the launch of his own show at the Heavyweight Art gallery on April 4th.

The new issue of Bad Day will be launched at The Emporium Art Gallery in Montreal, from 7PM-11PM, with an exhibition that features the art of Parra, Lukas Geronimas, Oliver Laric and WZRDS GANG, all of whom are also featured in the new issue.

If you can’t find Bad Day at your local bookstore you can also order it online.

Have a Bad Day! Go on… you know you want to…
