Handbuilt frames from 10 of our best bikesmitties. The photo exhibition is by Mishka D.A.R.T. rider Wilis Johnson. Should be a good time, although i expect the stinky level to be quite high.

The same night is a collaborative project I painted a bit in. Fish is a great artist who does a lot of art for Harmonix / Rockband. We just got back from his bachelor party in the blue hills where i got picked up from the campsite in a canoe at 7am to fish for big mouth bass on sunday.

No disrespect to workwear boots, but it’s just not for me. I rarely participate in the building trades and the shits look Herman Munster. However, I do dedicate a good chunk of time in the woods to hike and fish as often as life allows. That’s why I was glad to receive a new pair of Fracaps from our homies in Lecce, Italy. Grazie! These are going to be a staple of my wardrobe alongside the Clae Strayhorns (thanks Matt & Sung) I picked up at Capsule in vegas.

You can buy here.

Also, Marc Bell(Drawn and Quartely) just finished the poster for our upcoming October show
The Right Thing The Wrong Way
The Story of Highwater Books

Included will be various works by the core artists involved in the development of Highwater Books (Brain Ralph, Megan Kelso, Ron Rege, Jordan Crane, Greg Cook, Jef Czekaj, Marc Bell, Kurt Wolfgang), some of the work wil be new some will be originals pages from their published work. Though not all of these artists were published by Highwater, they all worked with/for the company in one way or another and since a large of part of Highwater was it’s status as a kind of comics “gang” it is important that the people that appear in the show were integral in that. Along with the original work there will be an installation that exhibits the ephemera/history of the company to give the art and artists context as well as a catalog that will give an oral history of the company.

My friends over at Five Day Weekend sent me a promo copy and I gotta say it’s a great DVD for the collection. The show itself gives candid access to a time in hip hop and NYC that we all have a warm fuzzy memory of. Rare footage of Dr. Revolt, a young Sofia Coppola, Warhol, Basqiat, Dr. Revolt, Dondi, RunDMC, fellow highsnobiety contributor Dante Ross, and countless others are the real gem here.
On the other side of the Ricks who photograph is iconic photographer Richard Avedon. The MFA gave me a nice preview of the show last week and I was transported to a time when the world was more glamorous and the mode of fashion was elevated sophistication instead of our current state of Kardashians and voyeuristic exploitation. The Paris Nightlife section of the exhibition was particularly strong with some his best work and some of the MFA’s best presentation.

Go visit the MFA. They just redesigned and have great film screenings as well as amazing bands in the courtyard.

Bouncing Cats- Directed by Nabil Elderkin

Hip hop has come a long way in 30 years. Today it’s influence can be seen in nearly every aspect of modern pop culture as it has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry. But long before it was used to sell fast food and laptops, hip hop was a culture born in reaction to the crime and poverty that terrorized our inner cities. It gave a voice to those who had been marginalized by society and a creative outlet for all who cared to be a part of it. Setting out to challenge inequalities, DJs, MCs, writers and b-boys created a movement that would soon transcend all social and geographical boundaries.
In going mainstream, hip hop and the industry that grew around it began to take on more marketable pop sensibilities. Yet even as social consciousness recedes back into the underground, the culture and it’s four elements continue to resonate with those around the world facing inequality and persecution.
In the upcoming documentary BOUNCING CATS we get a glimpse into modern day Uganda where decades of war, disease and poverty have made it one of the worst places on Earth to be a child. It follows the story of Abraham “Abramz” Tekya, a Ugandan b-boy and A.I.D.S. orphan, who is working to create a better life for the children of his homeland through the transformative power of hip hop culture. As the founder of Breakdance Project Uganda he has created a network of b-boy classes and workshops throughout the country which provide hope and creative outlets for the country’s youth. The film features narration by Common and interviews with Mos Def, Will.I.Am, and K’Naan among many others.
Bouncing Cats was produced by Red Bull Media House and directed by first-time filmmaker Nabil Elderkin. All proceeds from the film will go to Breakdance Project Uganda.

On FRIDAY AUGUST 6TH, REDBULL and the FOUTH WALL PROJECT will host a FREE screening of the film followed by discussion and analysis by some very special guests.

Founder of the world famous Rock Steady Crew CRAZY LEGS will be in attendance to take part in a question and answer session moderated by hip hop journalist CHRIS FARONE of The Boston Phoenix. From founding Rock Steady in 1979 to his current work supporting Breakdance Project Uganda he has embodied hip hop for over 30 years and will be giving his insight on the culture’s past, present and future.

He will be joined by local b-boy legends the FLOORLORDS who will be on hand to show their moves as they warm up for the United Styles 6 International Poppin Battles 1 on 1 Competition later in the night.

Doors are at 5:30 with the film starting promptly at 6 so show up early as space is limited.

THE MOVIE:

Bouncing Cat is the inspiring story of one man’s attempt to create a better life for the children of Uganda using the unlikely tool of hip-hop with a focus on b-boy culture and breakdance. The film follows Abramz, Crazy Legs, and Breakdance Project Uganda on a journey to use hip-hop culture for positive social change.

CRAZY LEGS:

As a founder NYC’s legendary Rock Steady Crew, Crazy Legs is one of most influential b-boys of all time. You may recognize him from the cult classics Wild Style and Style Wars. He also gave Europe one of it’s first tastes of Hip Hop culture performing along side Africa Bambaataa and Fab 5 Freddie on 1983’s New York City Rap Tour.
For over 30 years his commitment to the culture has never wavered and he continues to bring the positive message of hip hop to the next generation of b-boys and b-girls to this day.

THE FLOORLORDS
Boston’s own B-boy legends THE FLOORLORDS have been together since 1982 and have made their own mark on the formation of b-boy culture. They have toured the world competing and doing demonstrations while amassing quite a healthy collection of trophies along the way. In 2008 they were honored by Saucony with own line of custom shoes.
