View count … but … what is a view ?

03 May 2012, 17.50 | Posted in Copyright, Marketing, art, cool stuff, internet | No comments »

At a time when stardom is becoming defined by the numbers of clic, it would be very useful for everybody in this new ecosystem to know what a play/view really mean.
Are we talking page hits, full stream, part stream, clic only ?  Seriously … what are the rules ?
I then checked out for services like http://nextbigsound.com/ which is offering global statistics tracking. But once again, i didnt find any details on those stats.
An awesome upgrade to such services would be to aggregate those stats under a well defined universal metric …
I went trough the FAQ of all major publishing platform (Youtube, Vimeo, Soundcloud …) and once again didn’t found anything.

Why should i care ?
Well, first, here are some of the most asked question by artists around me. “Do you think this guy is gambling youtube? ” “why youtube seems to count shorter plays than vimeo ? ” etc …

We are distributing content on those services so we want to have proper statistics.Cf : Remember when you had to audit your label because you didn’t trust its royaltie statements ?

A second aspect would be the possibility to generate accurate streaming charts. Imagine if there would be a trusted tracking of qualified plays service … One that would ultimately help bringing a more fair and accurate way of collecting and licensing content online …

20 March 2012, 16.48 | Posted in Friends, art, cool stuff, music | No comments »

Mes amis de Audio research à Montréal (soon to be Chromeo) avaient à dispo un super plan.

Get it if you can.

Love u all !

Brazil is a huge music place. When a global survey recently asked young Brazilians to rank their passion for music, Brasileiros came first in front of Spain and UK. I must said that i never went to a place where music was so omnipresent in everyday life.

I am spending few month here visiting friends and meeting new people from the music scene.

I must said that i never went to a place where music was so loud everywhere you go and pretty much 24/7 …

In 2011, Criolo, a talented young 27 artist from Sao Paulo, became increasingly popular by successfully giving away his latest album for free -theweeknd style- on YouTube (pronounced u-to-be) and soundcloud. The live scene is vibrant as well.

Music seems to be a part of the national identity.

As Japan, this is a hard market to break for foreigners. Few people speaks english (and fewer seems interested by US music). Local scene is gigantic and constantly changing. Dozens of music genres are sprayed all over the country (as big as Europe) and every year new genres appears too.

Holla at me if you around.

Sales for Dr. Dre´s Beats approached $500 Million for 2011. It would take 50 Million albums´ sales at a gross ppd price of USD 10 in order to generate those same 500 Millions… So, what are we waiting for ?

Titanzinho Surf

Titanzinho is a small favela located in Fortaleza, northe Brazil. It’s one of these places left out of this huge country, far from the economy dream of the whole nation.Over there, you find the forgotten people of Brazil, the ones that no one wants to see. They are in the periphery, out of sight. They live in precariusness and poverty, suffering from drugs, prostitution, and extreme violence. Kids in the favela are often left having to face all dangers on their own.
However, hope lies here, very close.
The Ocean and it’s waves allow most of the kids to get out of poverty wih surfing. An excellent way out of the everyday life, and for some of them the dream of becoming one day professional surfer, like Pablo Paulino, Tita Tavares, Lucinho Lima, or Andre Silva, himself from the favela and co-director of the documentary.
The passion and joy of life despite everything
A lesson for us all!

The temperature is rising in the world of action sports web edits. Joe Rich and Odyssey BMX just released what might be the best edit so far this year. And having also Mike AItken back on bike after a very bad crash few years ago is clearly inspiring too. Amazing.

BBerry pics : the sex issue

I once asked, while cruising mission street in SF, what was this huge military castel there ? It is so-called The armory and it is also now property of kink.com. Last weekend, while being in town, i joined a private visit tour with Lamar Taylor and Hyghly Alleyne from the @XO crew and SF legend Bootsy. A huge and weird place.
