You can’t collect MP3s

I often been asked what is the problem with the music industry. There is a lot of factors but the key point is the fact that it is not a music industry crisis but a support crisis. Why should i pay for a format that i dont like ? The only music that i am still buying is Vinyl.

Interesting to know also that artists never had a bigger part of the pie when CD and digital formats took over the Vinyl.

Manufacturing cost for a vinyl is around 4 to 8 $. In comparaison the CD has a manufacturing cost of 0.4 to 0.8 cents and digital files aprox 0 … let you do the math …

Vinyl is an object of desire, it is non dublicable and a perfect collectible object. It is so far the best way to consume artwork around a music object

In 1996 i started a vinyl distribution company called Chronowax. This company was selling close to a million vinyl per year. I remember when Chronowax did for example campain reissues for Dej Jam and sold more than half a million LPs …

Back then the promotion and viral aspect of the vinyl was key to enter the club scene and the dj’s playlists. Digital happened to be way more effective and a less expensive way of promoting music.

But vinyl is still the best music object we had so far.

Selling picture discs and sexy connected devices seems to have a more bright future than selling CD’s and Music files ;)

Modern music marketing is about the artist-fan relationship

Modern music marketing is about the artist-fan relationship

In the mid 90’s i had been lucky to be involved with some major rap band releases.

As radios were very slow to react, we use to manufacture few hundred thousands of promo CDs, stickers etc for street marketing campaigns. Means that we used to pay almost half a million dollar to be able to give away music, just to get our new band heard by the kids ….

Things done changed, new digital ecosystem is offering services for free that used to be so expensive …

Make sure you are getting the best out of it:

- Get out the traditional album marketing path. Release yourself, Release more music than a traditional label can handle. Remember the mixtape era ?

- Give away music for free, donations, feedbacks, email addresses …Download is the new radio !

- Host your music in one single place and publish it across the internet. Tracking streams and download is the new soundscan.

- Release Objects, Clothes, art, picture discs, books, connected devices, handcraft records… whatever will match your brand and please your fans. CD era might be over but music will never be … digital only …

Who is Cheasleauen ?

26 September 2009, 16.11 | Posted in Marketing, cool stuff, music | No comments »

Who is Cheasleauen, can you introduce yourself ?

-My name is Cheasleauen pronounced Shass-lowen. That’s my actual name, not a stage name.. Cheasleauen is an up and coming artist trying to make it by bringing a different voice to Urban Music.

How did you get into music, whats your musical background?

- One doesn’t really get into music. It’s just around like air. Being a fan of music is what helps me with my musical background, and I guess the vocal classes that I took in class also helps. I can remember my mother and I singing into brooms and what not while cleaning or me grabbing a hair brush trying to emulate what I was hearing and seeing. As I got older I got into rap. Not knowing that I would actually become a rapper, like those who I grew up listening to such as Biggie and Tupac and Common just to name a few. I knew at a young age that I was going to do music. I could see myself doing anything else. Music is embeded in me.

What are you up to at the moment?

- Well I just put out my first mixtape “Miss Congeniality” Cash
Cow Edition hosted by my DJ and producer DJ K-Phi. He produced Jelly, Check, Like I Used to just to name a few. Other production was provided by Spaceliqs, on that project as well. Thus far the mixtape is getting great reviews and I’m really excited about that.. I also just started a follow up to that called “Dropping the Kids of at the Pool Cash Cow” which is also hosted by DJ K-Phi.
Both products is to help raise awareness of my Debut LP Miss Congeniality. I’m working on that also
It should be done by December 09.

Some of your production seems to have a little bit of euro electro music in it. Are you planning to do collabos in Europe ?

-Whats going to sound crazy is that I let the music fall where it may. I can go from a Hard Core song, to a ballad depending on the mood. I don’t look to be all over the place I just look to have fun. As well as looking to capture different sounds to make the best possible song. I at times go for the most obscure beats, its just the super uptempos is what I like the best, The kind that makes you slightly turn your head and say, “what are you going to do with that”. I love it!!
and the UK has really responded well to it. As far as collabs go as long as it makes since. Meaning if the artist can bring something to my audience and I feel it will go well I’m all for it. Production wise I’ve been in talks with a producer by the name of Frederic Gaillion. He makes Kuduro beats, he’s super dope!!! And its different he just sent me some beats that are right up my
ally. My team is in allso in talks with a record company out of the UK named Senseless Records and we’re looking to do a distrubtion deal for my album Miss
Congeniality, or a single deal for one of my songs. That’s still getting worked out now. Talks has being going well so its looking like it may work out.

Places of interest in your city?

-I’m from Detroit, Las Vegas, and New York but currently I live and record in Spokane WA and a definite place of interest is Shop Sabotage.

Shop Sabotage Boutique in Spokane WA. Is a streetwear store so the have the usual things that most sneaker boutiques have your 10 Deep, The Hundreds, Alife’s, SB’s, Crooks & Castle, and everything else that’s in it. Beyond the clothes they also have a DJ Booth and stage in the store. So you actually shop while an artist is performing.

When is the last time you seen a store that really pulled the music side, and the lifestyle side together like that? I actually came across a clothing sponsor of mines Two in the Shirt (T.I.T.S) clothing in that shop. See Al of Shop Sabotage Boutique and tell him I sent you, he’ll look out for you.

How is the Internet important for you today and how do you see it evolving in the coming years?

-The internet plays a huge roll, in everything I do musically. It makes the world small in a cool way. I have a studio in my house so I can make a song, have it mixed, and bounced down, send it out over the internet and have it reach people. No mailing it out, no stamps, no waiting in clubs. I can get it right to the DJs. With twitter (@cheasleauen) I can send out a hyperlink from Fairtilizer to the people that’s following me, and the people who is not following me. The ones who is just checking up on me. Then people RT it and get it to their friends. I love how the internet equals the playing field for the indie artist and the major artist. It doesn’t cost anything for me to send 2000 mp3’s to 2000 DJ’s, where as you had to press so many cds/records for that one song and pray they play it or not. Long live Serato, a DJ is going to load a MP3 in his computer 9 times out of ten. They will do anything not to carry crates upon crates of records with them that they may or may not play
I can’t say I know where its going to go but what I do know is you have to adjust with where ever it decides to go.

We discovered you on a Fairtilizer link. How do you use the service ?

- Fairtilizer is a dream come true. You can find me, fairtilizer.com/users/Cheasleauen It comes with so many options, good options usuable options. Options like hyperlinks for your songs, that way if you want to send your music to somebody you can, and you can also set a password for that music, that you send. It also promotes getting with other artist and making music together. Because you can send them songs that they can jump on also.

Did you know 4.0 ?

What can the future do for you?

23 September 2009, 13.34 | Posted in Mobile, art, cool stuff, internet, music | No comments »

What can the future do for you? Just came back from one great week in Korea. Main reason for my trip was the Lift Asia Conference which happened on Jeju Island. The conference explored how entertainment technologies are now reaching far beyond simple leisure, offering solutions to fields like education, health or entertainment.

We definitly have to look up for those oriental markets when it comes to understand the near future of our own markets. As china is already in a post piracy mode, we can discover great ways to publish and monetize cultural contents totaly out of the loop of the old media industry  models.

Nice presentation from Bernie Cho explaining the Korean music ecosytem. Itunes is almost M.I.A. Main digital music players are Cyworld, Melon and bugs. Both LG and Samsung are about to operate they own digital stores before “allowing” Apple to launch their own local operation. Keep in mind that Itunes would mean Iphones sales and therefore free wifi access to tons of servicesin a pretty much closed market …

For the record, Bernie is also manager of Tablo who has an awesome new album out now.

Korean Geek scene.

Giant Hi-top in front of an ABC-MART store in Seoul

Crazy sashimi

And i even found time to surf also this cool korean local spot that ended up to be pretty fun.

Big shout out at Asiance team (Olivier, Marie, Bosun) Fred @ mixin,Didier @ alpict, The great Ms J, Laurent Haug and Lift team, Benjamin Jeffe, Gold Dragon …

Kourtrajme is a movement

12 July 2009, 04.56 | Posted in cinema, cool stuff, music | No comments »

I already watched the GO FAST CONNEXION doc by Kourtrajme more than 10 times. It is hilarious.

I met Romain Gavras back in the late 90’s in Paris. He was very young and hustlin on a daily basis to launch Kourtrajme. He had a lot of energy and a “i dont give a f….” attitude that i really liked. He showed me his reel and we started collabos on video clips almost right away. He introduced me to the whole gang. it was a movement. I understood when i quicly had interns from the kourtrajme crew running around the company i was owning back then, selling and shipping records, producing videos … Here are some early stuffs and memories.

Madison Square Garden Backstage, NYC, 2008. Touring and Shooting for “Across the universe” with Justice.

This video below was on the reel that i first saw. i remember Roce and Tekila tex first teased me about this flick right after they cameo-ed in it.

Roce “Changer le monde”, 2000. An amazing DIY video. I even ended up doing the stunts in this one.

Mafia K’1fry “Pour ceux”, 2001. This is THE blueprint for the Justice’s video “Stress”. I remember that few days before linking it on Kanye’s blog, i was chating with Romain and never thought people will react the way they did. “Pour ceux” is real while “Stress” is a fiction.

In 2004, while i was working on bands like Chromeo or Bloc Party, we met with Romain this crazy french guy called Didier Super. All our friends were freaking out that i decided to produced this album and Romain directed the video, but man, that was so much fun. For the record, that year, i pitched kourtrajme for the Chromeo “Me and my man” video. Dave 1 wasnt so much into the hijacking scenario that Gavras wrote ha ha.

There would be so many more stories to tell but look out for the next long form that Romain Gavras is shooting now.

C’est frais ou pas ?
