Modern music marketing is about the artist-fan relationship

Modern music marketing is about the artist-fan relationship

In the mid 90’s i had been lucky to be involved with some major rap band releases.

As radios were very slow to react, we use to manufacture few hundred thousands of promo CDs, stickers etc for street marketing campaigns. Means that we used to pay almost half a million dollar to be able to give away music, just to get our new band heard by the kids ….

Things done changed, new digital ecosystem is offering services for free that used to be so expensive …

Make sure you are getting the best out of it:

- Get out the traditional album marketing path. Release yourself, Release more music than a traditional label can handle. Remember the mixtape era ?

- Give away music for free, donations, feedbacks, email addresses …Download is the new radio !

- Host your music in one single place and publish it across the internet. Tracking streams and download is the new soundscan.

- Release Objects, Clothes, art, picture discs, books, connected devices, handcraft records… whatever will match your brand and please your fans. CD era might be over but music will never be … digital only …

Another perfect example of why intellectual property law needs to be updated in order to be relevant in today’s new music ecosytem. Ophir Kutiel, aka Kutiman, is scoring more than a million view with this collage/mashup of youtube amateurs musician videos. Copying ? derrivative ? def not. Wired magazine is running a great interview of Kutiman Here. Worth reading.

This one is one of the orginal sample used to create this:

Gambling Youtube no more ?

From Youtube’s blog:

Video view counts reflect the YouTube community’s interests and the grassroots popularity of videos. We periodically make changes that allow us to display consistent view counts and accurately reflect a “real” view based on video consumption, video streaming and spam filtering. Unfortunately, a few people still try to artificially manipulate their video’s view counts. Some people game third-party view counts as well. That can make things unfair for everyone.

Recently, we found spamming issues associated with the view counts on a small number of videos. The inflated view count number on these videos will be frozen until actual views catch up to the published, artificial, view count. Also, a few people have commented that their view counts are updating more slowly. Occasionally the speed with which views update changes — sometimes it’s faster and sometimes it’s slower. But we are always working to make sure that the final view count numbers are an accurate reflection of the community’s interest.

Death row assets for sale

19 January 2009, 17.23 | Posted in Copyright, finance, music | No comments »

From Billboard.com

The assets of Death Row Records, said to include master recordings of Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, were auctioned yesterday (Jan. 15) for $18 million to Canadian development company WIDEawake Entertainment Group.

Because of the less-than-expected acquisition price, the only creditor likely to capture a return after lawyers and other Chapter 11 administrative fees are paid is the Internal Revenue Service.

That means other creditors, including unsecured ones like co-founder Lydia Harris, will be left out in the cold. Harris isn’t content with the verdict.

“This was all a scam from the beginning,” a disgruntled Harris tells Billboard. “Everyone wanted me to bring judgment down, and so I brought on the case. But now I’m not getting paid because I’m an unsecured creditor? Yet, administrators are getting paid and Suge [Knight]’s bills are still getting paid? If it wasn’t for me no one would be getting money. They made sure it happened this way because I was the biggest creditor. There must be some internal thing going on and I’m obviously not in on it.”
