Bold by Studio Job
Last week we visited the brand new ‘Design Huis’ here in Eindhoven. It’s a centre for design, that opened with the exhibition BOLD by Studio Job. Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel studied at the Design Academy and BOLD features 40 works that reflect Studio Job. Common objects are made with tactile materials and magnified and the blown up result has succeeded in making a new design out of the original object.
I think their work is really awesome. I love the strong graphic element of their work and they really succeeded in switching from designers into artists. it’s a difficult route to go, but every time they surprise me with their new shows and the mentality of their work. Their signature is immediately recognizable and breaths this ‘fuck off this is the best’ attitude.
The exhibition in the DESIGNHUIS show a selection of iconic and often symbolic works. Studio Job uses a clever play of measurements, materials and study of the shape to question the common notions on functionality, mass-production and style. The archetypical shapes of a vase, a candlestick or a tea pot are magnified, turning the designs into symbols of their own shapes. The materials are selected for their tactile and plastic qualities. You can see and feel the prints Job and Nynke made in them. Dead objects almost seem to come alive. Bulk and decorative ornaments add to the unreal look of the designs.
Okay, enough talking check some of their pieces here and google ‘Studio Job’ for much more of their oeuvre.

The next piece is unbelievable: all made with inlaid wood and the graphic is dooope:
