The start of something new

30 January 2012, 12.41 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Did you ever think about the process or what it takes to get the hundred’s bomb or your own original artwork on a spanky new t-shirt that your rocking.

I’m working on a project and decided to jump in the truck and head down 1-95 and hangout with my peoples at Ampro, I swear “On the Road Again” should be my theme song lol.

Ampro, based in Delaware County, Pa is known for their amazing custom screen-printing and embroidery work, as well as sporting goods and promotional Items. Their facility is crazy it’s like the Disneyland of manufacturing, from the production floor to the paint room, (check it out “Phat Farm Blue” that’s a throw back) you can get lost in here.

After my tour of the space I got a chance to sit down with my man Wes, we go way back. He’s been slinging t-shirts from way back in the days lol, on the serious side Wes really knows his t-shirt/printing game. He’s produced merch for everyone, from Freeway to Robot to Undrcrwn.  If you ever need to pop off a t-shirt line he’s the man. wpickell@amprosports.com

So I was ready and excited to see the entire process from start to finish and to be able to leave with my banging new product fresh of the press.

Stay Tune For Part II

Set Free X Urban Medium

16 January 2012, 10.33 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Yesterday started kind of rough, but then my phone rang and it was time to get one of my walls done in the Compound. We started by opening up the wall paper paint and putting it into an orange home depot bucket. It was so cold outside that the paste was frozen lol. To put the paste up on the wall we had to break a broom stick up into several pieces. This is your official wheat paste kit.

Next step, D started putting the paste up on the wall. I have always wondered how those Supreme and Obey ads got put up and now I got a chance to see how its done.

Well if you know me you would know that I am a huge Star Wars fan. I wanted a mural that was kind of personal to me but at the same time have Star Wars’ as the main piece for the entire wall. It was such an honor to see Urban Medium at work.

The detail that went into this piece was amazing. The Death Star had a speaker in it as well as the Tie Fighters. I guess Star Wars got that Boom lol

To see my logo and they way that D incorporated my name into this piece like a comic book was really cool. This really blew me away.

This was fun experience to be apart of. I really needed this in my life right now, things have been a lil crazy lately. Like it says on the piece Do or Do not There is No Try. Shout out to Urban Medium, make sure you check them out at urbanmedium.com and a Super Big Shout out to my  man Derrick from UM for coming through and lacing the wall. May the force be with you.

Peace, Set Free signing out!

MPC Photo Shoot Part 1( Behind The Pads )

09 January 2012, 22.52 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Not to long ago, while working on this Akai project with The [r ] evolve Group, I came up with an idea to shoot all the legendary producers holding their MPC that they made hit records with. We called to all the artists that we know that are out of NYC to be a part of this legendary moment. One of the reasons that I got into photography is because of a good friend of mine, Oluwaseye Olusa. The two of us have been working together since my AND 1 days. When it comes to me using a photographer for a project this is my go-to man in the 4th quarter. Everybody is out there using the 7d and 5d even me lol. Well, you know he had to come to set with the big dawg. He brought the HASSELBLAD out. SEEEEESSHHHH, talk about 40,000 grand cock sucker well here it is.

The list of producers we came up with for this shoot was Kg from Naughty By Nature, Marley Marl, 88 Keys, Grind Music ( Sean C & LV ), Heatmakerz (Rsonist), Scram Jones, Lord Finesse, Buckwild, Jerry Wonder, Green Lantern & Prince Paul. Talk about a line up. If you take any of these guys out of the Hip Hop time line we would be missing some classic music and albums.

When it was time to start the day, first up to bat was KG. KG is the guy that produced 2 of the biggest records in hip hop OPP and Hip Hop Horay. The day I heard both of these records I got goose bumps and said, this is a new sound in Hip Hop. KG produced a lot of records on the MPC 3000. I think the 3000 is the best beat machine ever made. For the shoot he was rocking the legendary Naughty By Nature shirt. Below is a timeless shot.

Many of you might not know this, but I used to produce music myself. I have 3 MPC 3000 still to this day. I thought it would be cool if I brought one of my MPC’s to the shoot to get it signed by all the producers. The first person to bless the 3000 was KG. KG was even saying to me that if he knew all these guys were going to be here that he would’ve brought his to get signed too.

Next up was one of my favorite producers ever, 88 keys. He just produced the hit record on the Watch The Thrown Album ( No Church In The Wild ). 88 still produces all his music on the MPC 3000. He has even given his machine a nickname, “Raw Dawg”, and there is even a polo sticker on his machine. Thats another reason he is one my favorite producers we are both Lo heads. If the Lo Life would start a new movement we would definitely be down. My partner Kirk and 88 was trading RRL secrets while we were setting up the next shot.

88 is defiantly a true character. He had everybody on set cracking up. 88 looked like he was doing a producer ad for Ralph Lauren. lol

When we were finishing up 88’s shoot, and I had to get a shot with both of us and our MPC 3000’s. I think im going to send this to the Polo marketing department and see if we can get a sponsorship. LOL. This is one of my favorite pix in my Hip Hop history. The next thing was to get 88 to sign my 3000. Getting him and everyone else to sign my MP was a dream come true.

Shouts out to The [r]evolve Group, Oluwaseye Olusa, Dre, Denero, Akai and everybody else that made this happen. Make sure you check back in for part II where I break down the next part of the day with Marley Marl & Grind Music ( Sean C & Lv ). C-YA  and holla at me and let me know what you think @iam_setfree
