DANIEL CLOWES ” Ghost World”

24 October 2008, 15.23 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

I always been a massive fan of  Daniel Clowes…

Specially about his Cult book ” Ghost World”, i read this comics 3 times and i could read it 10 times,it always so good to read it again and again.

Clowes know how to tell a story about middle class ordinary people, very simple, and he has a very specific “graphic “style”….a must.

Sometime It remind me the characters of CLERKS Kevin Smith’s movie..another american independant cult film.

Both Very recommanded.

Daniel Johnston x Jad fair x Half Japanese

19 October 2008, 16.10 | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment »

When i saw the post from my friend Remco, it reminded me how much i used to (and still) love and collect Daniel johnston records, in early 90’s….he was for me kind of Roky Erikson or Brian Wilson of the 90’s.It was time when i was into Yo la tengo, Sonic-Youth, K records ,Sub-Pop,Drag-City and all the Slack american indie noisy rock…

Should i mention Yo la tengo and Sonic-Youth have been the fisrt bands to support Daniel Johnston music…and yes i agree he’s one the best american songwriter ever.

I discovered his music through the “1990″ lp produced by Lee-Ranaldo (Sonic-Youth guitarist), the record cover is very funny, have a look on pics below.

But the song who changed my life is the one recorded live at a radio with Yo la Tengo called ”Speeding Motorcycle”…D.Johnston declare his love to his motorcycle, this should be one of the best love song wrote ever.

I shoot below some of the old vinyls i collected 10 years ago…

For all the people who apreciate Daniel Jonston should have an ears on Half Japanese /Jad Fair’s songs, he’s a radical artist who recorded albums with D.Jonhston but with Moe Tucker (Velvet Underground drummer) as well, Don Fleming,Yo la tengo, John Zorn etc…

He’s now on Jello Biaffra’s label ” Alternative Tentacles”…

It was cool to listen to all these records again, reminded me when i was a teen…hahahah it’s good to gettin old.

NORMAN WHITFIELD 1941-2008

Bad day for the American black music.

One of the best 60’s and 70’s Motown producer passed away Tuesday.

He has been one of the most prolific songwriter/producer for Motown, he did his reputation producing and co/writing songs and hits like:

“papa was rolling stone” for The Tempations or ” I heard it through the grapevine” for Marvin gaye…and

David ruffin, Jr walker,Willie Hutch etc…

He has been the first at Motown to extend the songs to 12 mn, with experimentations including distorted guitars, sound effects ,multi tracked drums with pretentious chords arrangments.

In the the 70’s he took motown sound into a more Psychedelic direction, very inspired by the dark side of funk…everyone should listen to the hypnotic/psychedelic/space funk record:

UNDISPUTED TRUTH ” Higher than High”

SP.ONE @ Anonymous Gallery NYC.

03 October 2008, 11.32 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

NYC Graffiti artist SP.one has a show at Anonymous Gallery:

Anonymous Gallery, NYC is pleased to announce the release of The New Hustle, by Greg Lamarche. This silkscreen edition of 100 is the first print collaboration with the gallery. Printed in 5 colors on white 335 GSM, Coventry rag paper, the work measures 24 x 18 inches. Signed and numbered by the artist and printed by Axelle Fine Arts. This edition is available for $225. For inquiries and purchase information please contact: sales@anonymousgallery.com or visit: www.anonymousgallery.com

Letters, graffiti, text and hand-styles all inspire this new edition. It builds on his signature style of mixing fonts, repetition, combining multiple perspectives and bold colors. To preserve the over-all hand-made quality he created an original paper collage of hand-cut letters as the basis for this print. The New Hustle speaks to a do-it-yourself sensibility of artists finding new strategies to get their work out in to the world and creating situations to get in where you fit in.

Born and raised in New York City, he has been making collages since the sixth grade when he used spent fire works he gathered from the schoolyard as material. He began writing graffiti in 1981 and published Skills magazine during the early 90s. He has worked both as a designer and artist since 2000.
