King Snow is the Shit!

06 February 2010, 02.44 | Posted in Magazines, Timbo, homies, interviews, skateboarding, snowboarding | No comments »

I have a new favorite magazine and it’s not just because I got to ambush Jake Olson-Elm and trash talk Christine Brennan. King Snow, the winter brother from the same mother of King Shit has just dropped their new issue both on stands and online. Unfortunately you can only get the print version in Canada, what’s up with that buddies? But you can check out the entire thing on the webz right here. If you don’t already know, King Shit is the brainchild of Dave Carnie and Chris Nieratko from Big Brother along with boss man Ryan Stutt. You can also read full issues of King Shit now too, read both and you won’t be able to read another skate or snow mag again.

Hahahaha! I gotta give it up to Jayceeoh, he got Lindsay Lohan trying to eat his new CD! And word is she’s gearing up to collab with Lady Gaga. They could start a group called the Ugly Twinz! She must be trying to study some pro shit to get ready. Classic material yo!

The Real CBC

As part of the magical mystery shred tour this season, Herndada, Uncle Craig, and I got put down by our homie Ryan Proctor to one of the illest zones at Whistler Blackcomb, the CBC. Named because the the trails above it are referenced by Canadian TV shows, CBC is a glade run on Blackcomb that was only added to the resort property 7 years ago and is still largely unpatrolled. What makes it totally unique is the fact that the entire area was hit by forest fires this summer and is so burnt out that there isn’t a single branch to get in your way and the only real hazard is brushing up into a trunk and etching a line of soot across your coat. But shredding there is like cruising some post-apocalyptic nuclear winter warzone, it is ill as fuck. That’s Mike Hernandez above ripping a big backside lipslide on a snowed out boulder in the middle of CBC. Find this spot if you can! More photos by Craig Wetherby as well as some of the fires from the Ministry Of Forest and Range BC after the jump.

Park City Pow Day

22 January 2010, 19.41 | Posted in homies, snowboarding | No comments »

I’m in Park City, Utah right now dodging east coast Sundancing d-bags and soaking up some of the most powderific snow I have ever encountered. I spent the entire day on the hill hitting locals-only lines with DC’s Nick Olsen, Halldor Helgason, Kimmy Fasani and Raewyn Reid and holy shit it was some of the most intensely fun riding of my life. Along the way we ran into Torstein Horgmo giving the world famous JD from Fuel TV a few lessons on surviving the pow pow. Stay tuned for some of the footage, it’s classic.

Everybody knows that I am not a Cali dude. I’m not hatin, or maybe I am, but the fact of the matter is, I got way more love for the Big East. But I’ll be honest, something changed on my trip out last week for Agenda and it was all due to two little letters, V and W. You see, part of my problem with Cali is that you are in the car literally all the time, and most of that time you are sitting in stifling heat in bumper to bumper traffic and fighting the urge to descend into full on Michael Douglas Falling Down mode. But what I found once I hopped on the 5 just minutes after landing at Burbank airport and throttling up a freshly gassed and waxed 2010 Volkswagen Golf GTI was that it doesn’t always have to be like that.

I had had the chance to preview the new Golf in Germany a couple months prior (peep the story in the upcoming spring Antenna) and as unbelievably rad as that was, there was something about whipping around LA that connected me with this whip on an entirely different level. It might have been the thrill of breaking speed limits (there aren’t any in Germany) or the fact that the Sirius didn’t play a wack track the entire time I was whipping it (in Germany I had German radio) that made it a totally new experience. But whatever it was, it was all the way dope.

From LA down to Huntington Beach for Agenda with my homie Pete Williams and back I felt like I was the bo$$ of California as I pushed this mini rocket to its full capacity. And as I did I realized that all that Cali car time isn’t your enemy as long as you are in the right car. The GTI is that car. Peep some pics of the fun after the jump. Also peep the mini shoot I did with Luis Tolentino, Chris (CtotheJL) Lee and Brian Jones over on Rad Collector.

I have been sending nonstop positive thoughts to my homie and Frend Kevin Pearce since his crash in Utah on New Year’s Eve day. Cohen found this archive shot from a couple summers ago at the SHUT shop when KP was in town with Romain and Nicolas. Man a lot has changed in the world since this pic. Support Kevin by joining his Facebook group here. I ride for you homie!

Golden Age x Dirty Jerz

Like anyone lucky enough to be around during the Golden Age of hip hop, I get mad nostalgic for the old joints. Although most of the heat came out of the 5 boros, Dirty Jerz was right up there with Brick City and its surroundings producing a steady stream of talent that exists until this day. My homie Aaron from Boundless flipped me this mix over the holiday and holy shit did it take me back to the dirty side of things. From Redman to Channel Live to Heather B (remember her from the first Real World on MTV ha!) Jerz had joints! Download New Jersey State of Mind by DJ Teddy King and Mondee it right here. Tracklist after the jump.

I’m not saying these piano guys aren’t sick musicians but this shit is just plain weird. Anyway, the murder verse on this beat is Lupe, - that chorus has been burnt in my brain for a minute! Turnt up!

Deka x Fela!

When is the last time you heard of anyone giving a fluck about a Broadway play? For me I think it was when I was ten and peeped Phantom of the Opera, although I can’t front on the one man version of A Christmas Carol by Captian Jean Luc Picard aka Patrick Stewart that my moms brought me to one year. That was pretty dope. But the truth is, Broadway is a played out genre and when times is tough, dropping 80 bones for some singing and dancing ain’t really in people’s budgets outside of Chelsea, nah mean? That is until the Roc gets in the building. In a move that makes it impossible to deny that he is the Bo$$, Jay-Z swooped in as executive producer for the new musical Fela! and now it’s the hottest shit in the streets. Not that the heat is undeserved, the story of Fela is one of the best in modern times, and his music is time eternal, but throwing a 3 plus hour Afro-beat freakoff every day is not how the Eugene O’Neill theatre usually gets down. I haven’t seen it yet but everything I’ve heard is that it’s one of the dopest shows put together in any medium in a while. On top of that, my big homie and BLK OPS general Brian Deka PauPaw was commissioned to do handmade one-of-a-kind blazers for the show and was interviewed for a webisode about the experience. Big up my dude! To read his account of it, check Deka’s column on Rad Collector.
