Seven Years Later

This is the view of the Twin Towers memorial lights from my crib. There’s obviously way too much to get into about the towers to even start. Who knows what really happened, who knows anything? But one thing is for sure, these lights are the sickest public display of mourning in the world. This year was really weird though, because other than these lights, it was like everyone had totally forgotten 9/11. I went to a fashion show at the Armory on 66th street. The last time I was there was September 13, 2001 when the Fridge crew volunteered our services to the activated NY National Guard troops. For three weeks we stopped working on our magazine to produce the Guard’s official internal communication newsletter. We had an office in there, we had Majors and Sergeants reporting to us, we had hummer rides to Ground Zero, it was surreal. We’d go out for lunch, blaze a philly and come back in though like 30 MP checkpoints, who’d be waving us through like we were some diplomats and shit. We were buggin! Anyway, it’s seven years later and I’m back in the same building where I would be getting stories from Generals about dead bodies they’d come across and now the shit is straight Zoolander with a huge stage set up where the tanks and anti aircraft guns used to be. Even the New York Post only ran like 2 pages on 9/11 when even a year ago they were giving it half the day’s edition. I’m not saying that it’s right or wrong, but it did seem strange to have fashion week and 9/11 at the same time. Do we all really not care anymore or have we collectively healed to the point where we no longer have to be affected by it? Either way, those lights are amazing.
