Spot Check: Turntable Lab and TTL Annex

I dropped into Turntable Lab the other day after having had the pleasure of running into two of my favorite homies and DJ’s, DJ Sabo and Neil Nice on separate and random occasions. What does running into them and Turntable Lab have to do with one another you ask? Well it just so happens that Sabo (aka Will Sabo) is the newly minted manager of the Lab and Neil Nice runs the TTL Annex. Word. I chopped it up with both of them to get a taste of what’s poppin at the Lab on a random weekday. Lots of good stuff after the jump.
On the Turntable Lab side of things, there are a million reasons why TTL is considered by many to be the finest DJ and music enthusiast shop in the world. From vinyl to 12″ to mixtapes to DJ equipment, they have the product on lock. But more importantly, they have the movements on lock. The whole organization is stocked with music aficionados who live and breath what they are selling. With an in house label, Money Studies, a brolic team of DJ’s and deep connects with the likes of Mad Decent and Fool’s Gold, it is no surprise that they are running the game. Here’s a look around.

Welcome to Turntable Lab.

Stacks.

Everything’s covered from Baile Funk and Baltimore…

To Jay Z.

Some shop favorites.

Mixers n shit.

Headphones and the like.

Keyboards and samplers. Interestingly enough, the biggest selling electronics item at TTL is the Audio Technica AT-PL50 personal turntable. It’s just for listening, not DJ use and goes for $89.

The dopest shit about the Lab is that it’s a music community hub and the first place you should go in NY to find out what’s going on.

Next Door at the Annex, Turntable Lab has applied their same approach to a lifestyle boutique that carries everything from iDiom Jackets and WESC denim to rare videos and other accessories. Neil Nice gave me a tour and picked out a few of his favorite things.

Neil Nice.

Tees from Rouge Status, Money Studies and more.

Hard to find shit like the MF Doom boxset.

And the Stussy x Turntable Lab kit.

Front of shop display case…

Well stocked with everything from Krink…

to Nooka.

A small but solid collection of denim and hats inlcuding 10Deep, fourstar, Alphanumeric, and others.

As well as Turntable Lab’s own DJ bag line collab with Headliner.

They also have dope shit like out of print copies of Ego Trip.

And one of my favorite things…

A little battery powered VW bus that you can run over your 33 1/3 rpm records and it plays them!
Thanks Sabo and Neil for the hospitality. Turntable Lab and TTL Annex are located at 120 E. 7th Street between 1st and A. Phone is 212.677.0675.

In addition to holding down the TTL fort Sabo has a record out called Global Warmbeats. Produced with his partner Zeb, Global Warmbeats is a downtempo latin and Brazilian-inspired coolout music feast that represents just a taste of what this kid puts down. You can cop it on iTunes or Beatport as well as check out what Sabo’s up to at his Sol Selecta label’s site.

Neil Nice’s latest project is the Don’t Stop the Dance mixtape where he freaks everything from Thom Yorke to Depeche Mode to Chromeo. Cop a free download of fire here!
