The North Face iPhone App

10 December 2008, 03.50 | Posted in downloads, homies, snowboarding | 1 comment »

My good homey Nate Bosshard, who heads up The North Face’s Action Sports unit, hit me up this week to tell me about the iPhone app he created. I was a little shocked at first because I have been secretly working on some iPhone apps and was just waiting for Nate to tell me that he’d gone ahead and put my idea into production even though I hadn’t even told him about it yet. However Nate’s app is totally different and perhaps even more useful than mine, although you’ll have to be the judge once my shit drops. Anyhoo, as an international shred fiend and consummate distrustor of resort ski reports (yeah the mountain is empty, let’s say its dumping!) Nate wanted to create an app that would give him real time, super accurate snow conditions for any mountain in the world. As opposed to the development team I am running with (none) Nate had access to the heads at Factory Design Labs and within a month they had The North Face Snow Report app wrapped up from concept to rollout and available for free download on iTunes. Now you can get detailed forecasts, wind info, high resolution trail maps, direct links to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather monitors, and even a handy North Face store locator all in the trendy iPhone having palm of your hand. Seriously though, if you live for fresh pow this app is crucial. Download it free here! Thanks Nate!

Another one for my Braza Massive. My homie DJ Babz Brutal who runs Rio de Janeiro has been in Europe for the last couple weeks as part of the Red Bull Music Academy. Babz ran a blog throughout his travels that is pretty dope. Check it out here. He has also been blogging for Nike Sportswear Brasil as well. If you can read Portuguese, I highly recommend it. E Noi$$ Babz!!

Ovinhos de Amendoim!

I have an obsession. When I first went down to Brasil years back, I didn’t know shit. Couldn’t speak a lick of Portuguese, knew nothing of the culture, really didn’t have a clue why I was even there to begin with (it may or may not have involved a girl). In any case, as a vegetarian, I quickly learned that I was totally on my own. Every single meal there involves massive amounts of meat, seriously dudes were mowing down chicken hearts for breakfast telling me, ‘try one they explode in your mouth!’ Obviously I wasn’t trying to get down like that. Anyway on one of my missions foraging for food I ended up at a gas station that had a decent mini mart. Perusing aisle after aisle I could really only come up with some wildstyle potato chips or some cheetohs (they are everywhere) but nothing that had an ounce of protein in it until I got to the register and saw before me the shining rack of Ovinhos de Amendoim! I had no clue what they were but by the illustration on the bag it seemed safe to say that somehow a peanut was involved. Having been veggie for nearly a decade at the time, I had learned that if all other attempts at a veggie meal failed, you could always rely on peanuts. Good ol fashioned peanuts. Well these Ovinho things definitely weren’t old fashioned but they definitely had peanuts. So I bought a bag, went out in the parking lot and ripped that shit open. The only way I can describe what I found inside would be to say it was like a salty Kix cereal ball with a peanut inside, which doesn’t sound all that delectable at first, but man these things must have been baked with crack because I tore through that first bag in about 2 seconds and was back in the store buying every other bag they had. No lie, by the time I was done, no mercado within 20 miles of where we were (which was Praia do Rosa, Santa Caterina btw) had any Ovinhos de Amendoim left. I lived on these things for 15 days! Now I’ve searched high and low but you cannot get Ovinhos in the states. I’ve emailed distributors, I’ve combed every supermarket in Astoria, I’ve tried to buy from the company direct, all to no avail. So basically every time I go I fill up a suitcase of these things to take back. And when I can’t go, I ask every Brasilian friend I have to pick some up for me, send em, whatever, just get me some Ovinhos! That brings us to this pic above. My great friend and brother Lucas Penido, who runs TheHypeBR, the world’s foremost Portuguese language hype blog, went down to Brasil a few weeks ago and like the ill homey he is, brought me back mad bags of Ovinhos. I been so craze though, I haven’t linked to pick them up yet and what started as 10 bags has dwindled to three. I’m telling you they are like crack, Lucas had never even had one before I put him down and he had to literally hide them in his crib to avoid eating the remaining joints. Then today comes this message entitled S.O.S. with the above pic attached. Perai meu grande irmao, to indo pro Queens agora, eu quero pegar meus Ovinhosss!

From my good friends in the north, Montreal to be exact, comes this fresh pair of Air Max 90’s. Joe and Scott from LimitedHype must have been channeling their inner Miami when they put these together (hey I would too if I lived in Canada) but the result is pure butters. Good shit homies! More looks after the jump.

Red Bull Big Tune

My friends at Red Bull invited me to check out their Big Tune event going down tomorrow at Highline Ballroom here in NYC. Conceptualized by my homie Jonathan Moore in Seattle, Big Tune is a national beat making competition that started with 96 producers all vying for a shot at producing a beat for Common, Nas, Lupe Fiasco, or The Game. After regional competitions in Philadelphia, Oakland, Houston, Detroit, Chicago, Seattle, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, the final 16 will go head to head tomorrow for the crown. Alchemist, Digable Planets and Ghostface will also perform. I rolled through South Paw in BK for the Big Tune pre-party last Saturday and if that was any indication, Big Tune should be off the hook. See you there.
