A couple of weeks ago I got another chance to go to Iceland, a seemingly obscure place that I’ve now spent significant at. This time it was for the 2nd Reykjavik Fashion Festival, an Icelandic fashion week/cultural interchange that was one of the dopest things I’ve had the chance to experience. It was no Paris or New York fashion week, but who the fucks cares, it was in Iceland! I got to see the Northern Lights! Ghostface was there! The video above is a quick hit on the trip, check out my piece along with Craig Wetherby’s photos on Frank151. To all the homies in Iceland Skál!!!!
As hard as it is to believe, I’ve never made it out to Austin for South by Southwest in all my travels. Shit, I had never even set foot inside the state of Texas until a layover on my way to Mexico last year. I’m still not really sure if that’s a good thing or not but one thing is for sure, if I was gonna go to SXSW, this would be the year. My partners in crime at Frank151 and FrankRadio have put together a showcase that could easily lay claim to being the illest in the history of the festival. Let me break it down for the skeptics: they’ve got WU TANG CLAN x FISHBONE!! I didn’t even believe it when Domingo told me for the first time. Two of the most influential (not to mention large) crews in the history of hip hop and rock on the same stage is just bananas. Then they’ve got YELAWOLF, TROUBLE ANDREW, ROCKY BUSINESS and ERYKAH BADU like it’s no big deal. Obviously it’s a big fuckin’ deal! I don’t have my ticket yet, but if I decide to come, you can find me on the stage yo! Hit the jump for full show and RSVP info as well as for Rocky Business’ free new mixtape “White People Are Drug Dealers Too.”
My homies at Frank151 dropped a book and website with Scion this month called 151 Pieces, an interactive multimedia fashion guide featuring tons of friends from all aspects of the streetwear industry. Check out the interview with Harry McNally from Pegleg as just a small taste of what the 151 Pieces project entails. Go here for more.
Oh sick, the Frank151 x Casio G-Shock book I wrote with Craig got turned into one of those dope digi flip books. If you are a G-Shock head and didn’t get your hands on the real thing, it’s definitely worth a peep. If you’re really feeling it, hit me up, I think I have a couple copies left.
You can’t make this stuff up. Out of left motherfucking field, or Dallas to be exact, comes this ill anthem from the Paperchaserz complete with the repeating chorus of “Frank, Frank,” and a graphic that looks exactly like the Frank151 logo. What?! Domingo, you better be on a plane to D-Town ready to sign these dudes right meow!
With so much poppin off for CMJ, even the most discerning music snob can get a case of the “fuck thats” and choose to skip the Marathon all together. I mean, there are just too many shows and to be honest too many bands that suck. But there is also some really dope shit going on this week too. Case in point, the homie showcase tomorrow night at Southpaw. Frank151’s got equal parts classics and new skool with everyone from Grand Puba to Trouble Andrew. A special heads up to HighSnob readers: Redman and Spank Rock are gonna be there too. Oh and did I mention $1 Colt 45? Hells yeah Billy D! Hit up events@frank151.com to RSVP and say Timbo Baggins sent ya and you are all good for VIP aight? Full info after the jump.
My homies at Frank151 have been working on a major online relaunch and have cooked up a pretty epic contest to kick it off with. From now until the end of the year, they and the new web portal LikeMe are giving away 151 sick prizes and 15 that are beyond fresh like a street skating session with Stevie Williams, a studio session with Raekwon, a tour of Oakley with Bob Burnquist, or a Hood sesh with Danny and The Dingo. That’s bananas. Go here to get in on it.
Man, the most humbling experiences are always the most rewarding. I got the chance to chop it up with an elder statesman of streetwear yesterday by the name of Mister Cartoon for the upcoming Frank151 x G-Shock book. A true OG, Cartoon has a perspective on this whole lifestyle we live and love that needs to be heard in person to be fully appreciated. He was living it before most of us were born. What else is he doing in town? Yesterday he was doing a live installation at a phone store on 6th Ave to promote his new phone collab with PCS Mobile and today he’s headlining the G-Shock event with Kanye. That’s what you call a natural born hustler. Much respect.
My big homies and colleagues at Frank151 have been up to some major shit lately. I’m talking in addition to their ill book, their most-popular-in-NYC New Era fitteds, their ridiculous parties, and their behind the scenes manipulation of many a thing here in the rotten apple and in cities beyond. Yep on top of all that, they have gone and launched a record label called Frank Radio. Not coming into the game quietly, Frank Radio is jumping in heavy with two major hip hop releases hitting the streets next Truesday: Grand Puba and U-God. I’ve had the chance to extensively preview both albums and they are fire. Puba is straight golden era nostalgia with RetroActive while U God finally gets his shine on with Dopium. To jump everything off, Frank Radio is throwing a release party this Thursday, June 18 with both Puba and Golden Arms performing at Le Poisson Rouge. As a hookup for fam only, you can RSVP here for VIP free entrance. New York Kings Fam only! See you there! Shouts to Mingo and Dave C! Details after the jump.
Check out Sheikh Malbon. The homie Mike just got off the Gumball3000 race and has apparently become Saudi royalty. Between nearly 6000 miles of highway, maybe a party or two, and a night in the bing in New Orleans with Duane Peters and Trigger Gumm for shooting off fire works out of a moving vehicle (at least that’s what the cops called it), Mike was given the honorary head garb from Sheikh Amro Kalawi of Saudi Arabia. Not a bad look kid! You can check out more of Mike’s Gumball madness at Frank151.com.
AKA Timbo J Baggins. AKA Caranguejo do Norte. I live in Brooklyn in the country's first housing project where I imagine that the sound of the BQE is actually the waves lapping at the beach in Brasil. Eu falo portugues. The only thing I've ever learned is that nothing is constant. Let the fun begin!
