Copenhagen Concert Hall

28 October 2010, 14.22 | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 comments »

Along with our friend Jonas Hz, Karl and I were recently invited to the Copenhagen Concert Hall by Lars Skovgaard who is Events Manager there. I´ve been wanting to see the inside of this fascinating building ever since it opened in early 2009, so I was happy to finally get the opportunity.
Jean Nouvel´s Copenhagen Concert Hall is part of ‘DR Byen’, the home of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. It´s a remarkable building; From far away it’s this big monumental blue cube, but as you approach you begin to see structures behind the surface. It looks like scaffolding covered by translucent blue skin. The building changes depending on the light of the day and at night video and images are (sometimes) projected onto the exterior. All this makes you very curious as to what’s inside.

Train view.

The building houses the main concert hall and 3 smaller studios, which sounds quite simple, but in reality is a layered maze of foyers, hallways, tech rooms, office spaces and, of course, studios. The glass and steel, fragmented layers of sound panels, plywood staircases and concrete work well together to make you feel lost. The massive concrete walls were added wrinkles in the casting process and later polished with olive oil to make them feel soft. Contrasts all over.

The most impressive of all is Studio 1 – the main concert hall. It’s really hard to describe this space. It’s quite large but feels oddly small, there are sharp geometric shapes everywhere but everything feels soft and warm. As Lars said “I come here almost every day but it´s still almost a religious experience when i enter this room”. Everything in here is so well done, and you get the feeling it all looks exactly as it does for a reason.

The 60 ton light & sound platform usually hovers above the orchestra.

Surfaces have been milled to spread the highest audio frequencies.

Notice the colour nuances on the chairs.

The wooden backs of all 1800 chairs have been sanded by hand revealing the layers of the wood and making each one unique.

The 6000 pipe organ.

During the building process of the Copenhagen Concert Hall the budget was expanded several times, making this the most expensive concert hall in the world. This resulted in drastic cutback in DR staff and funding, and understandably many people have mixed emotions about the building.
However it is truly a masterpiece, and the main concert hall is one of the most beautiful spaces i have ever been in.

Our new project is an on-going series of mixes created by a group of international friends of ours. All contributors have been asked to make a selection of tunes to be distributed on this site. We aim to bring music of great variety and to upload a new mix at least every month. Enjoy.

The first mixes by Hugo Capablanca, Dr. Dunks, Djuna Barnes, Tiedye and Alex from Tokyo are up now.

This is not a look book of a new Scandinavian or Japanese streetwear hiking/outerwear/ in to the wild-inspired brand. This is the real thing.

My brother decided to walk 900 km and over a total ascent of 50.000 km ( højdemeter !) from the Atlantic sea / along the boarder of Spain and France, up and down of the infamous Pyrenees mountains , to finally end in the Mediterranean sea. This took him 45 days, and as he told me it was a long journey in many ways.

Bravo Peter !!!

La route

Start to walk – Hendaye-Atlantic sea

Everything seems cool,,

,,,but then

After 3 days this happened,,, the trip suddenly seemed impossible.

A radical decision had to be made, and new style of hiking boots was born ( CHECK ACG !!!)

Dinosaur mountain,,

Dramatic installation in the middle of nowhere,,

Band of horses.

Peter in his right element, high on life.

Pic du Canigou, 2718 m (holy mountain)

The end is near.

Just a few phone-cam photos from a recent visit to the Mori Art Museum..

‘Snow’ by Tokujin Yoshioka. A large tank filled with hundreds of kilos of small feathers and a fan turning on and off, simulating the falling of snow.

‘Waterfall’ also by Yoshioka. Basically a massive table, almost 5 meters long, made of optical glass.

‘GINGA’ by Taro Shinoda consists of a round pool of milky white liquid. The 50 bottles in the ceiling are occasionally but simultaneously releasing droplets of liquid into the pool, creating tiny momentary ripples on the surface.

‘Wald aus Wald’ by Takashi Kuribayashi. A white paper forest floating in mid-air, molded from japanese paper and pulp.

All installations are part of the exhibition ‘Sensing Nature’ that beautifully combines art, design and science. Sorry about the image quality.

The Shanghay Chair

26 August 2010, 08.01 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Designed by KiBiSi / Coloured by Wood Wood / Produced by HAY

Originally designed for the Danish Pavilion for the Shanghai World Expo by our friends from design firm KiBiSi, the Shanghay chair is composed of 4 small boards of moulded plywood folded around each other merging legs and seat, back and structure into the 4 constituent parts.

We helped KiBiSi develop six different colours carefully balanced to work together in new combinations. As the chairs are easy to disassemble and reassemble, people will be able to create their own hybrid designs by recombining their colours of choice.

The chair was already selected by Wallpaper* magazine as one of the 100 best designed products of 2010. For anyone in Copenhagen there’s a launch party today August 26 at HAY HOUSE, Østergade 61 from 4 to 10pm.

Available at HAY and Wood Wood stores soon.

Stuff

Just a few things that has come through our doors lately.

First up this bottle i got from a large Swedish vodka brand.
Now this is probably the best looking bottle of vodka I have ever seen (well except maybe for those home brew ones from Reykjavik in 98). No logo, just a recognizable shape and some alcoholic liquid inside.

When you have done 20 years of extensive branding you can get away with something like this. I mean after using that iconic shape for so many years of Absolut this and Absolut that, there it is: Absolut Vodka. So simple.

Actually I also got one of these leather studded ones, but I can’t seem to find it now. I strongly suspect Sanne for drinking it.

Also this new integrated handlebar/basket just came from our friends at Copenhagen Parts. This is the first product coming from this new cycling focused design company. As i can’t get this thing on my quill stem i wouldn’t know how it actually works on the street, but it does look very good. Looking forward to seeing more products coming from CP in the future.

And then we finally got our package from And Press, Eric Elms´ new publishing company. The highlight for me is Eric´s own book Wish You Were Here, a small 2-colour zine-like book on Kilroy. 224 pages of cultural references.

Fashion weak

Hello again. It’s been a while since we last put anything up here, but I guess we’ve been busy with other things. Personally I spent most of December eating and drinking.
So last week Karl and I went to fashion weeks in Paris and Berlin respectively.
BBB was crazy as always. Funny how tens of thousands of people will gather for these things and tell each other how much they don’t like being there. However, although trade shows by definition are uninteresting, it was good to catch up with old friends and meet a few new people as well.
And that Tempelhof Airport is just incredible.

Photo by Fliegender – it looks a lot better without the massive branding.

While in Berlin I stayed with Jon, who had these beautiful vintage hand stitched pillow cases hanging on his wall:

I SLEPT AND DREAMED THAT LIFE WAS BEAUTY

I WOKE AND FOUND THAT LIFE WAS DUTY

Oh and I finally got a chance to experience the infamous Panorama Bar. Hard to explain, but also crazy.

And so now I’m back in a snow-filled Copenhagen making my 2-year old daughter do drawings on my phone.

If you own an iPhone you should check out this nice little app called Bloom by Peter Chilvers and Brian Eno.

By the way i just read this interesting interview with the Eno in The Guardian.

Eno on the decline of record sales: “It was a bit like if you had a source of whale blubber in the 1840s and it could be used as fuel. Before gas came along, if you traded in whale blubber, you were the richest man on Earth. Then gas came along and you’d be stuck with your whale blubber. Sorry mate – history’s moving along. Recorded music equals whale blubber.”
