Top Gun is finally getting a sequel, 31 years after the original movie hit theaters.

While in Australia promoting his new movie The Mummy, Tom Cruise stopped by the morning television show Sunrise where he announced the exciting news.

"It's true, yeah it's true," the actor revealed. "You know what? I'm going to start filming it probably in the next year. I know, it's happening, it is definitely happening."

While rumors of a sequel had been circulating for a while, a firm announcement this quick comes as a bit of a surprise. Last year, Cruise mentioned the possibility of a sequel while on The Graham Norton Show, saying "I'd love to work on it if we can figure it out."

In other movie news, critics are ripping apart Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
