Son of a Tailor
1 / 7

In a world where the classic cotton t-shirt is overlooked as much as it is worn, the team at Son of a Tailor seeks to provide refreshing care and craft to the beloved staple. Recently, the Copenhagen-based team gave me the opportunity to experience its product first-hand.

When you first log on to Son of a Tailor's site, you are prompted to select a style. I went with CE No. 1 for a more modern cut. The stye has a subtle, single-stitched neckline with a double stitched hemline for durability. I was able to add a raw, unstitched chest pocket and fold the sleeves for some extra flair. With other combinations available, there is sure to be something for everyone.

With the style selected, it's time for the good stuff: the fitting. Tape in hand, my roommate helped me take down my measurements. If you're not fortunate enough to have a roommate or someone you feel comfortable enough with to actually measure you, you also have the option to measure your favorite t-shirt instead. If you don't own measuring tape, don't stress; Son of a Tailor will send you one free of charge. Making the perfect bespoke t-shirt for you is its goal and it provides detailed instructions as well as live online help to ensure that your final product is just what you want.

After picking our your neckline, fit and embroidered initials, you're all set. Orders are processed quickly, but I had an issue as the black color I had selected was sold out and running behind on orders -- a drawback of being a small-scale operation. However, Son of a Tailor's customer service was incredible. With live chat living directly on the site I was able to find help quickly and easily, with questions about the selection and measurements or my order. I had the option to wait a bit longer for black or change the color of my order and get a discount on my next one, but in the end, they were able to fulfill my black tee order earlier than expected. I received my custom fitted t-shirt in about two weeks from the order date, not a bad turnaround at all for a made-to-order piece.

My shirt arrived in a branded box with a note of thanks, and a tag written for me signed by the tailor. It also mentioned that a little extra length was added to account for shrinkage in the wash. The shirt initially looked quite small and I was a little worried, but once I put it on I was almost hesitant to take it off. The long-staple organic cotton fibers felt incredibly comfortable. One wash and hang dry later, the fit was really perfect and the shape was not altered.

Overall, I can say that my experience with Son of a Tailor was truly pleasant. Online bespoke offerings may often leave a customer confused with all the options, but the live help is truly one of the brand's strongest points. Being a small company may have had its shortcomings in my case, but that ability to provide individual attention made up for that twofold. The t-shirt is a versatile piece that transcends trends, styles and age, and the team's passion for providing the perfect t-shirt for you is unparalleled. And the price? Only starts at $60 to $70. I look forward for my shirt to being a go-to staple in my closet throughout the seasons.
