These Jean-Michel Basquiat Skateboards Are Literally a Work of Art
You might have recently spotted Chanel's luxury skateboards, featuring the late Karl Lagerfeld’s iconic interlocking Cs, retailing for a not-unexpected price of $7,700. But if you're into art and skateboard culture, and looking for something a little less punishing on your wallet, The Skateroom has released a series of art-print decks that are designed to be hung on your wall just like a painting.
Created in collaboration with the Jean-Michel Basquiat estate, The Skateroom's pieces feature some of the late NYC artist's most iconic works printed across a triptych of boards, including Hollywood Africans (1983), Horn Players (1983), and Irony of a Negro Policeman (1981). Made of 100 percent Canadian maple wood from sustainable forests, each piece features handmade silkscreen prints and is delivered with wall mounts.
What's more, part of the profit goes toward supporting Skateistan, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering children through skateboarding, with projects in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and South Africa.
With price tags starting at $550, these Jean-Michel Basquiat pieces aren't the real thing found at auction, but they should tide you over until you're earning millions.
