Charli XCX Deconstructs the No-Pants Trend
If there's one person we can rely on to pull off no pants with aplomb, it's Charli XCX.
The pop star, who never shies away from a statement look, put her own spin on going pantless for an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, where she promoted her upcoming arena tour with Troye Sivan.
The "Von dutch" singer, who is gearing up to release her new album Brat in June, looked half office-ready, half rave-ready. On top, Charli opted for a Saint Laurent cotton-twill shirt. On bottom, a pair of leather GCDS hot pants balanced out her buttoned-up top.
The real showstopper, though, was Charli's thigh-high boots, plucked straight from Sacai's Fall 2024 collection. The boots are designed to resemble trouser legs draped over a pair of pointy-toed stilettos (kind of like Elsa Hosk's viral "jean boots"). The combination of Charli's thigh-baring bottoms and trouser leg-like heels look something like deconstructed pants — they're pants, but not really.
Charli's 'fit was perfectly on trend, considering the number of underwear-as-outwear moments we spotted on the Spring/Summer 2024 runway: Gucci outfitted models in teeny, tiny short-shorts, Miu Miu debuted sequined hot pants, and Ferragamo paired knit cardigans with knit briefs.
Fashion's aversion to pants is catching on, demonstrated not just by Charli XCX. Kendall Jenner, Kristen Stewart, and Rihanna are just a few of the celebrities who have recently stepped out in pants-free 'fits.
As Highsnobiety's News Director Jake Silbert pointed out: "Who else besides the rich can justify losing their pants? The rest of us have jobs to keep."
