Double Tap to Zoom

Every now and again, a controversial constellation shows its face – or one of many, rather: Double denim is as adored as it is feared, manifesting in just about every other trend or revival thereof.

It skips over and spares some – think, ballet- or corpcore – only to reappear, reimagined, faintly or more aggressively, in the likes of cowboycore, indie sleaze or boho chic.

Whereas Chloé and Valentino, for instance, are honing in on 60s and 70s eclecticism and those eras' downright historical ties to the jeans fabric, the likes of Diesel and Bottega Veneta are viewing the cotton twill-weave through a more conceptual, experimental lens (leather jorts or denim Intrecciato, anyone?).

Same goes for real-world sightings of the style, ranging from nostalgic nods to more modern adoptions of double denim'd outfits. We see you, Lewis Hamilton.

TikTok's been aflood with tutorials on how to dress in double denim without looking a fool, for at least a year now – a slow but significant surge in interest for it clearly ongoing.

Combining pieces made of the same material can be as campy or crazy or classy looking as you want, with double denim's unexpected, hardly-matched versatility offering the opportunity to channel your inner everything – from vintage rockstar to mall goth to Olsen Twin.

Double denim is so much more than blue 501s and a matching jacket. To have different shades and shapes of the textile interplay, however daringly, is half the fun.

In my recent memo on leather, (faux) fur and wool jackets, I should've/could've made special mention of non-animal, weather- and season-appropriate denim alternatives, too. Well, here we are.

As alluded to, not even the most quietly luxurious among us are immune to the denim-ification of the everyday wardrobe. A shirt of jeans is, by some metric, the ultimate commitment to the cause. Don't you get flakey now.
