Fay Is the Outerwear Master You Should Know About
Workwear is a perpetual force in the world of menswear. Especially now, with luxury labels collaborating with workwear giants to get in on the action, workwear is as relevant to fashion as it has ever been. But while big luxury offers a more refined take on the category, there’s a handful of labels that give you the real deal. Fay is one of them.
For the uninitiated, Fay’s history dates back to the ‘80s, when Diego and Andrea Della Valle fell in love with the jackets worn by the American firefighters. Seeing not only the functional potential of these robust designs but also the aesthetic value in the beautiful clasped fastenings and hard-wearing fabrics, the Della Valles took over Fay which had long produced technical pieces for fishermen and firefighters.
Fast-forward to 2023, and Fay is one of the most underrated names in men’s outerwear. Having masterfully adapted the firefighter’s jacket for urban life, Fay has built up a dedicated cult following across the world, building out its range from heavyweight work jackets to an all-encompassing apparel collection. But, with that said, for most of the brand’s disciples, it’s Fay outerwear that really grabs them.

4 Ganci
One of the label's most recognizable designs is the 4 Ganci. This jacket features four of the titular metal clasps to fasten it, as well as a vintage-look split leather build that has been lifted from the brand's long archive.
Padded Rain Jacket
Cut from a water-repellant canvas fabric, this padded rain jacket not only keeps the rain off, but also insulates with its quilted interior filled with lightweight wadding. We love the bold gold hue of this jacket which works to modernize the vintage design.
Down Shirt jacket
Layering is a prime concern as we move into the transitional period. Although this lightweight down shirt jacket can work as a mid-layer until the end of winter, it can become the main event as we hit Spring and the weather improves.
Patchwork 4 ganci
The Patchwork 4 Ganci embodies the reasons why Fay is one of the most underrated names in workwear. Combining a complete mastery of craftsmanship with its patchwork construction, this jacket also retains the hard-wearing features that made it such a staple in the first place: big pockets, metal clasp fastenings, and a simple yet comfortable fit.
Down 4 Ganci
Looking for a winter coat to keep for life? Look no further than the Down 4 Ganci. This down-padded coat features a nylon cordura shell with a water-repellent and breathable membrane. In combination with the thick down lining, the shell makes this suitable for extreme conditions.
Padded Shirt Jacket
In much the same way as the Down Shirt Jacket that we picked out earlier, this design is a winner when it comes to layering. The heavyweight flannel exterior features an outdoors-inspired check pattern in a neutral palette which slots effortlessly into any wardrobe.
Down Gilet
Lifted from the archive, this Fay gilet looks amazing in its punchy red colorway. The water-repellent shell is just another feature on the list of reasons to welcome this piece into your outerwear wardrobe.
