From Ashes to Slay: This Coat Is Made Out of Pre-Smoked Cigarettes
The Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) (the French Institute of Fashion) kicked off Paris Fashion Week with its Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design graduates fashion show.
Simply put, the presentation was smoking hot (pun intended), Jiawei Han's collection especially.
To lay out plain and simple, Han created a coat made out of cigarette butts. Yes, you read that right. Cigarette butts — and they were used.
Han shared some looks at the creative process, which saw "thousands" of pre-smoked cigarettes broken down, stripped of their coverings, and stitched together to form the outerwear piece.
And thus, the Cigarette Coat was born.
Han's design is a genius effort, especially in the upcycling sense. Though, we can't help but wonder how the coat...smells. Cigarettes carry a strong smell known to linger. Let's hope the designer washed the butts. Sprayed them. Something, at the very least!
Han's Cigarette Coat wasn't the only piece that garnered attention during the showcase. The IFM designer also sent a literal muscle suit (veiny trousers included) and a massive "fake parka" down the runway, further playing on Han's outlandish, couture-esque vision.
What a fire way to close out your senior year.
