Editor’s Notes: Starting out as a tattoo artist, Matt McCormick honed his artistic style by tattooing celebrities like Tyler, the Creator and Mac Miller before transitioning full time to exploring the theme of the American West through painting, drawings — and now for the first time, tapestry.

Teaming up with Hong Kong creative studio AllRightsReserved, the ones behind KAWS' oversized HOLIDAY exhibition and Verdy's exhibition in Hong Kong, McCormick has taken his cowboy motif beyond the canvas.

For the ongoing collaboration called “MEET Matt McCormick PROJECT,” the artist so far has made a sculpture of a lone cowboy taking a rest, and a vase modelled on the classic cowboy boot."Before working with AllRightsReserved, I had never made a three-dimensional cowboy work outside of a piece of jewelry," McCormick reveals."Taking a painting and reinterpreting it into a sculpture was like learning a new language at first—an entirely new way of looking at the subject."

Now, McCormick has created a limited-edition rug, with 100 signed pieces available at the Highsnobiety shop. "I was thinking about functional pieces that I hadn’t already made that could simultaneously connect to the subject of the work, and rugs and tapestries jumped out," the artist explains. "There’s a rich history of these items in the American West, with a lot of the best-woven pieces coming from the indigenous tribes, but the influence is not lost on the modern cowboys and ranchers that I tend to use most commonly in my work, and it felt like a fitting addition to the project."
