OVERCOAT Imagines Mt. Plushmore For Summer
Japan-by-way-of-New-York label OVERCOAT is all about the details. Founder Ryuhei Oomaru knows his way around garment design, having created patterns for some of the biggest luxury brands in the biz; his own clothing line is, obviously, rich with thoughtful details that only a master craftsman could conceive.
Of course, the most obvious statement pieces from OVERCOAT's Spring/Summer 2023 collection don't require a designer's pedigree to appreciate. This season, it's all about the gorgeous deep pile fleeces utilized for relaxed shirts, shorts, and all-in-one sets.
These all channel the pastel tones present in the entirety of OVERCOAT's new line but, even if they were monochrome, these pieces are ludicrously fluffy. Who says you have to save the soft stuff for winter?
Otherwise, OVERCOAT SS23 is classic Oomaru. Crisp tailoring cleverly incorporates his signature soft shoulder and quietly subversive touches like single-button closure.
There's an air of classic menswear (pointy camp collars) interjected with more contemporary touches, like hems gathered by built-in elastics, but the overarching theme is minimalist elegance. Smart patterning allows for cargo pockets that lay flat and dolman-sleeved overcoats (another signature) subtly shaped by darts.
It's all terribly intelligent and extremely wearable, which is OVERCOAT to a tee. Or perhaps to an overcoat.
The brand's midas touch makes even the most basic garments interesting. Consider the draping shirts cut just long enough to tuck or billow, with side slits to accentuate the flowy shape.
Like what you see? Of course you do. Seasonal deliveries have already begun on OVERCOAT's web store and its bevy of Japanese stockists.
