US Police Used ‘The Purge’ Siren to Signal Coronavirus Curfew
Law enforcement in Crowley, Louisiana recently used the siren from the dystopian horror movie The Purge to initiate a coronavirus-related curfew for Acadia Parish. According to KATC News, police rode around blasting the siren so residents would be informed of the city's lockdown from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The Crowley Police Department chose to implement a curfew because "Acadia Parish received the worst rating for the rapid spread of the virus," their Facebook post reads. "It has been put into place in order try and slow the spread. There is nothing anyone needs to be on the roads besides emergency situations. If you don’t want to comply with the orders of the Sheriff and the Chiefs, you will be dealt with accordingly."
Per a local news report, residents had mixed feelings regarding The Purge siren, however, Crowley Police has decided not to use it moving forward.
"Last night a 'Purge Siren' was utilized by the Crowley Police Department as part of their starting curfew. We have received numerous complaints with the belief that our agency was involved in this process," said Acadia Parish Sheriff K.P. Gibson. "We were not involved in the use of the 'Purge Siren' and will not utilize any type of siren for this purpose. Calls regarding this matter should be directed to the Crowley Police / Chief Broussard and not the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office."
For those unfamiliar, The Purge is a horror film series centered around an annual holiday in which all crimes, including murder, are legal for a period of 12 hours. "The Purge," as its known, begins when the siren is sounded.
