This week FX announces a new documentary series focusing on Tupac Shakur and his mother Afeni, an author, activist, and former Black Panther. Titled Outlaw: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur, the five-part program will explore the lives and relationship between Tupac and Afeni, as the series is directed by Allen Hughes.

Hughes previously worked on HBO's The Defiant Ones, which detailed the friendship between music industry titans Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. He also directed two standout films from the '90s, Menace II Society and Dead Presidents, while also teaming up with Tupac and N.W.A. to direct early career music videos.

“Told through the eyes of the people who knew them best, Outlaw is an intimate wide-angle portrait of the most inspiring and dangerous mother-son duo in American history, whose unified message of freedom, equality, persecution and justice are more relevant today than ever,” FX said in a press release.

Be sure to stay tuned for more on FX's upcoming Tupac docu-series, Outlaw: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur.
