Here's How to Aid Turkish & Syrian Earthquake Survivors
In the early morning of February 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit near Gaziantep, Turkey, and just after 12pm, another 7.5-magnitude tremor followed. Citizens of southern Turkey and northern Syria have since been devastated by the disasters.
Three days after the Turkey-Syria earthquake, the combined death toll has surpassed 22,000 individuals and thousands of buildings have collapsed.
Displaced survivors have had their lives upturned by quakes that hit while most were sleeping, leaving few able to escape with their belongings, let alone their lives.
Further complicating matters for those who were able to outlast the initial natural disasters, a winter storm only arrived just prior to the quakes.
For survivors, the struggle is ongoing. It goes without saying that immediate aid is essential not only to save lives, but to provide for those without.
One of Europe's largest Turkish and Kurdish diasporas is located within Germany — Berlin in particular, where Highsnobiety is headquartered — and hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees have also relocated here.
Many of our coworkers, peers, friends, and neighbors have been directly or indirectly affected by the earthquakes, so we especially take this matter to heart.
If you're able to offer support to those in need, it's important to donate specifically to charitable organizations currently on the ground helping those affected.
For instance, the White Helmets and their team of volunteer workers are crowdfunding support for efforts that include saving survivors trapped under rubble in Syria. Because Syria is inherently challenging to reach for those aiming to provide international aid, it's important to support first responders already on the ground.
Turkish charitable organization AHBAP, founded by singer Haluk Levent, is meanwhile providing food, shelter, and medical supplies for those affected in Turkey.
Simultaneously, Doctors Without Borders is currently delivering medical aid to survivors.
