Benjamin Alexander Huseby and Serhat Isik
GmbH is a German clothing brand based in Berlin, Germany, founded in 2016 by Benjamin Huseby and Serhat Isik and their close community of friends. GmbH started as a project to raise awareness about the current world events and express them through fashion.
Isik and Huseby met on the Berlin club dance floor back in 2015, and the GmbH clothing brand was born. Reflecting on experiences as immigrants in Europe, the creative duo pulled inspiration from political topics and multicultural heritage, intertwined with Berlin’s infamous nightlife and club culture.
The brand has gained widespread recognition in just over a few short years. Berlin’s GmbH has become well-known for its streetwear aesthetic and sustainability initiatives, using technical fabrics (PVC trousers are the brand’s iconic) and deadstock textiles in their designs.
Huseby graduated from the Chelsea College of Art, London, in 1997. Before launching GmbH, he worked as a freelance photographer shooting for various publications, including Dazed, AnOther, i-D, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar.
Serhat Isik, on the other hand, has a background in fashion design. Isik gained his initial experience through a MA in men’s fashion design at Weissensee Academy of Art in Berlin. Before founding the GmbH brand, he designed menswear for Berlin-based brand Bless.
The dynamic duo Serhat Isik and Benjamin Huseby managed to successfully merge their skills to establish the GmbH brand, and are equally involved in all aspects of the business.
GmbH is short for Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung. In direct translation, it means “Company with limited liability” — a legal terminology describing a corporate structure similar to a Limited Company (LC). Isik and Huseby didn’t want to use their own names in the brand name, so they opted for a more neutral brand title to create a sense of community and inclusiveness.
GmbH clothing brand is stocked at over 50+ online and offline retail stores worldwide. GmbH stockists include Highsnobiety, Matches Fashion, Net-A-Porter, Ssense, Farfetch, Lyst, and Dover Street Market, to name a few.
Since discovering deadstock fabrics on a trip to Milan during the starting years of the brand, GmbH began as a sustainably conscious brand, making an effort to be environmentally and socially responsible from the get-go.
First, GmbH’s fashion collection was made entirely out of materials that otherwise would have been thrown away. Now, around 90% of the materials are either organic, recycled, upcycled, or deadstock textiles, adhering to their Environmental Policy promises.
First and foremost, GmbH’s clothing is inspired by Berlin, where the duo met and lives, and the pair’s multicultural origins. From one club to another, Berlin’s techno scene, unique styles, individuality, and functionality are closely intertwined and deeply rooted in GmbH’s garment designs.
