AS Roma (A) Finds the Perfect (New) Balance
For as long as I’ve been a fan of AS Roma’s kits, they’ve been made by brands who love a skin-tight look.
While for the well-sculpted football Roman that might not be an issue, for a stumpy Brit with a deep appreciation for both Italian football and Italian food, it is most certainly not.
As of last season though, the Serie A side has been in cahoots with New Balance who themselves have been on a good thing of late when it comes to making nice kits.
After dropping a neat one-button collar home jersey (which too was my selection in our 2022/23 kit round-up) earlier this summer, AS Roma has revealed its all-new crisp white away kit for the upcoming campaign, a kit which made its debut in a convincing 5-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk last night.
Drawing inspiration from Rome’s Neoclassical period, the away jersey features the city’s famous architecture as the backdrop to the design.
The “Lupetto” – the club’s epochal wolf symbol – also makes an appearance in a delicate graphic tonal marbling effect which has been integrated into the front of the jersey, with the words “Figli di Roma” found on the back of the neck, in tribute to the bond between the city, the team that bears its name, and those who wear the jersey.
The 2022/23 campaign looks set to be an exciting one for AS Roma who – after winning the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League last season – now go after their first Scudetto since 2001/02.
