And the Winner of the BERLIN, BERLIN Prize Is...
The third edition of BERLIN, BERLIN has arrived. From in-person pop-ups and parties, to exclusive content and products, we're delving into Berlin's creative culture. Explore the content here and browse the drops here. BERLIN, BERLIN is made possible thanks to support by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises.
Earlier this week, we announced the 8 finalists of the BERLIN BERLIN Prize, one of who will receive €20,000 to expand their creative practice and have the chance to be stocked in the Highsnobiety Shop.
From an ex-YEEZY designer pushing the bounds of knitwear, to meticulously constructed high fashion and club-ready clothing, the finalists showed the strength of the Berlin design scene.
With the help of our judges — Live From Earth, Mumi Haiati of Reference Studios, Philippa Boltze from ANDREAS MURKUDIS, last year's winners Kasia Kucharska, and our very own Nin Truong and Herbert Hofmann — we narrowed down the list and we are excited to announce our winner. Congratulations Gerrit Jacob!
Founded in 2021, Gerrit Jacob describes his eponymous brand as "a perpetual exploration of class-based tastes, German kitsch and the more awkward aspects of coming-of-age." The venture serves as a homecoming for the designer. After living abroad for more than 10 years, first studying at Central Saint Martins and then working with some of the biggest names in fashion including Balenciaga, Kenzo and Gucci, YEEZY and Martine Rose, the designer decided to move back to Germany and launch his label.
While not his hometown of Hamburg, Jacob settled in Berlin and started working on designs inspired by his upbringing. "In my hometown, the triannual fun fair is a big event dating back to the 11th century. It’s attended by everyone from young kids to drunk teens and its bright bright colours and airbrushed stalls inspire my work until this day," Jacob explains."I’ve always been a bit of a drawing nerd and illustrations play a huge part in my storytelling; they’re the main way through which I like to explore narratives."
Balancing the playful almost nostalgic designs, Jacobs is meticulous about quality with all of his fabrics being made in Italy: "To me the most special outcomes are achieved when I combine the same dedication I have to the creative process to creating the luxury product itself; it has to feel thoroughly considered and last a long time."
On winning the prize, Jacob describes it as a "boost of energy" that will help him take the brand to the next stage. For the money, he already has plans for it — hire two of his best friends that have been working part time on the brand to make sure "the company can grow sustainably and healthily".
