Convertible Pants Aren't Just Acceptable Now, They're Actually Cool
Yep, outdoor wear is everywhere, you've heard it all before. But while we've all grown accustomed to seeing sneakers built for the mountain, namely Salomon and HOKA One One, make their way down from muddy trails, other appropriated gear comes as more of a surprise. I was browsing Voo Store's site earlier this week — one of Europe's most on-point stores — and spotted the arrival of convertible pants. It was then I knew — gorpcore's final phase was complete.
If you'd have worn these five years ago, you surely would have been laughed all the way back to the camping store. Convertible pants were strictly the reserve of wannabee pro hiking dads — a piece of sheer practicality, and a pretty much anti-aesthetic purchase.
It's a shame it's taken them this long to come back in cool ways. Not only does the trouser to shorts switch offer some very helpful functionality in changeable weather, but techy trousers like this look great in the summer. When your warm-weather blank tees mean your top half is minimal, it helps to go heavy on detail, and by heavy detail, I mean heavy zippage, below.
With this rightful return of zip-off cargo pants making it the legwear choice of the summer, we rounded up some of our favorite convertible pairs to indulge in the look with. While the likes of The North Face might have been making them for a while, everyone's at it now. Honestly, even Balenciaga.
Get your convertible pants fix below.
Brain Dead Zip-Off Cords
Zip-off pants aren't only available in the classic cargo variety. Trust Brain Dead to serve up a beautifully odd pair of convertible cord trousers. Chances are you won't be operating these in full-leg mode for much of the summer, though.
Balenciaga Zip-Off Cargo Pants
If you needed any further proof that this once-outcast piece of clothing had fully infiltrated high fashion, then here you are. A pair of khaki (every camper's favorite color) zip-off cargo pants courtesy of Balenciaga. Oh, and at the grand sum of more than $1,300.
Stüssy x Gramicci Convertible Pants
Red zip-offs might just be the ultimate summer statement and a brave choice for those that dare to pull them off. Last year, Gramicci and Stüssy teamed up for a reworking of the former's classic convertible cargo pants. A wild pair that's definitely still worth copping.
Saintwoods Zip-Off Jeans
OK, maybe a little too far for most, but we had to include these zip-off jeans, even if we're still uncertain about them ourselves. Still, though, all the best clothes are controversial.
Nike ACG Summit Cargo Pants
This mint green goodness comes courtesy of Nike ACG, another long-time purveyor of the zip-off pant. Will look so good with a white tee this summer.
Dries Van Noten Palok Bis Trousers
A subtle pair here from Antwerp Six alumni Dries Van Noten. In fact, these are so subtle that they keep their convertible credentials pretty well hidden. That might come in handy in certain uninitiated circles.
Stella McCartney Convertible Pants
Some people are put off cargo pants by their tendency to be a little baggy. If this applies to you, then you might find solace in this elasticated-cuff pair of zip-offs by Stella McCartney. The shorts also look great on their own.
