Beyoncé Serves Black Excellence With 'Black Is King'
Beyoncé has released her new visual album Black Is King, via Disney+. The film is described as "a celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience" in a press release, and fans agree that Bey definitely delivered on that promise.
Black Is King is written, directed, and executive produced by Beyoncé, and features a notable cast such as JAY-Z, Lupita Nyong'o, Kelly Rowland, Pharrell Williams, and Naomi Campbell. The film is based on the music of The Lion King: The Gift — the companion album Beyoncé made for last year's Disney remake of the classic film.
"I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy," Beyoncé wrote in a statement shared to Instagram. "The events of 2020 have made the film’s vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey."
Spanning across the globe – shot in London, New York, Ghana, South Africa, and Belgium – the film gives a modern retelling of The Lion King through the lens of Black ancestry, Black families, and the African diaspora. Black is King also includes four full-length videos for the tracks "Already," "Brown Skin Girl," "Mood 4 Eva" and "My Power."
