Bong Joon-Ho & the Creators of 'Parasite' Are Being Accused of Plagiarism
It hasn't been all parties and celebrations for Bong Joon-Ho and the cast and crew of Parasite following their Oscars route. Indian filmmaker P.L. Thenappan is now accusing the creators of the award-winning film of plagiarism.
Thenappan claims that Joon-Ho stole the plot for Parasite from 1999 Indian film Minsara Kanna, of which he served as producer. When speaking with India Today, he said, “I saw the South Korean film Parasite and I feel that they have stolen the film’s crux from Minsara Kanna. I’m in talks with international lawyers and contemplating on filing a case against the makers of Parasite soon.”
Thenappan also stated in a separate interview that it's only fair for those behind Minsara Kanna to file a case just as others who feel Indian films draw from their work have done in the past.
Conversely, however, the director of Minsara Kanna, K.S. Ravikumar, doesn't seem to be all that upset with the claim. “I’m happy that the story has received an Oscar, even if it [Minsara Kanna] served as an inspiration," he said. "However, filing a case is up to the producer.”
According to Parasite’s production company, CJ Entertainment, no official claims have been filed as of yet. “We have no knowledge about plagiarism claims from an Indian film. We have not received any information regarding this issue,” they stated.
Minsara Kanna tells the story of a scorned Indra Devi and a multibillionaire's son who poses as Kasi to work for Indra in order to get closer to her younger sister.
