Commonwealth SS19 Is Made for Sade Fans & Workwear Stans
Brand: Commonwealth
Season: Spring/Summer 2019
Key Pieces: The sweatsuit features a print referencing Sade's myriad of album names, and an artfully done nude of the iconic musical artist (referencing a certain famous photographer) is an instant cop. Also worth a shout is the Malcolm X long sleeve pulling the cover art from The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Desert camo military cargo trousers get a sporty hit from a purple side stripe, and the purple workwear trousers add a welcome dose of color to any closet.
Release Date: February 1
Editor’s Notes: Commonwealth plans to seriously step up its game this year. On the heels of its well-received adidas ZX500 collaboration, the store's in-house label ups the ante with a collection that toes the line between utilitarian workwear, military gear (a recurring theme for the brand), and casual sportswear. Graphics-wise, Sade and Malcolm X inform long-sleeve tees and knitwear. Commonwealth designed a typeface-heavy pattern referencing Sade's many albums that appears on sweatpants and hoodies.
One early contender for standout piece is the charcoal gray car coat made from pile fleece. Sure, it's incredibly on-trend given the market's current predilection for textured fleece outerwear, but it's classic enough to last beyond a few seasons. Workwear fans will have plenty to cheer for, from straight-fit trousers in smart pinstripes or muted purple and forest green. Obviously the advanced choice is the purple pair. There's also a chill gilet in black and purple with plenty of pockets to store stuff like external batteries, vape pens, or whatever it is kids decide they need to carry around these days.
Almost all the items are made in Los Angeles, save for the fabric belts which are made in Jamaica, and the China-made vests. The Commonwealth Spring/Summer 2019 collection drops on February 1.
