What We’re Saying: Craig Green and adidas have turned their attention to the ZX 2k Boost this season, giving the model an elevated, Craig Green-approved spin. The duo has turned the Boost-equipped sneaker into two new versions, dubbed the ZX 2k Phormar and ZX 2k Phormar 2.

Both models are constructed using the fewest individual pieces possible and fall in line aesthetically with Green and adidas’ previous collaborations. The shoe was first unveiled as a prototype during Craig Green’s FW20 runway show and represents the latest evolution of Green’s work with adidas.

“I wanted to explore a new way of constructing a shoe. We took inspiration from the functional simplicity of the ZX 2K Boost and have created a shoe where every design detail is led by function,” explains Green. “The external shell of each PHORMAR is constructed from a single piece of fabric. We used high-density cording, which is fed through channels stitched into the fabric, these exposed cords can be used as handles to tighten the shape of the upper, so that the shoes can be ergonomically engineered around your foot.”

This collection — which sees the Phormar arrive royal blue and white and the Phormar 2 arrive in beige, black, and white — represents a shift in color palette from Green’s earlier collections.

“I’m always interested in tensions and the contrast between light and dark, something that I often explore throughout my work,” says Green. “The first collection we made with adidas was full of vivid bright colors. I wanted to explore another side of my work with this collection, and worked with earth tones as well as monochromatics.”

Green’s adidas collaborations have always walked a tightrope between vintage — often working on iconic silhouettes of the past — and a very futuristic aesthetic. The Phormar and Phormar 2 are no different.

“I like how the end result is both futuristic, but also minimal. I always think that simple and functional construction details are beautiful,” explains Green. “With this shoe, the reason for its shape is because of the cords and stitched channels. Every element serves a functional, as well as an aesthetic, purpose.”
