Anyone Else Notice Dave Free’s Space Age Watch at the Grammys?
I expected a few things last night at the 67th Grammy Awards, like Kendrick Lamar and his team clearing the award ceremony (which they did with Kendrick taking home five trophies). However, Dave Free, Kendrick Lamar’s long-time creative collaborator, holding a Grammy while wearing a URWERK watch was not on my bingo card.
URWERK is a watch deep cut.
It’s one of those brands you might catch on the ‘gram with a caption like If You Know, You Know. Launched in 1997, URWERK has quickly built a reputation for its mechanical futurism: blending impressive horological specs, aerospace materials, and designs that wouldn’t feel out of place in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner universe.
It’s a statement watch, to say the least.
Dave Free's model from the Swiss independent watchmaker, worn at the Grammy Awards, is a URWERK UR-100V SpaceTime Ultraviolet from the Swiss independent watchmaker.
A mini UFO for your wrist, the watch features a deep purple DLC-coated case and a satellite display.
My favorite aspect? The two indicators.
One tracks the distance a person would travel at the equator in 20 minutes (over 555 km), while the other tracks the Earth’s orbital speed around the sun.
It's a showstopping design worthy of a red carpet-moment. If you want to cop this piece, the URWERK UR-100V Ultraviolet is available for $60,000.
I’m always happy to see more and more people dip their wrists into the independent watch world, especially on the red carpet.
Lesser-known names are producing some of the most innovative wristwear out there, and they deserve attention on big nights like this.
As for the rest of the wrists, at the 67th Grammy Awards, we saw plenty of the new classics. Sports watches continue to be a staple even when people want to dress up — Rolex, Hublot, and Omega dominated the award ceremony. Meanwhile, Jacob & Co. made a handful of appearances, still ruling the red carpet.
A favorite has to be Kai Cenat’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon "Spider-Man."
Aside from being one of the biggest streamers at the moment, Kai’s watch collection deserves more attention — he clearly puts a lot of time and effort into it, with a series of grails ranging from an icy Cartier Crash to the occasional Patek Philippe Grand Complication.
Another stand-out was Janelle Monáe’s TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph. Maybe it’s the watch’s callback to the OG vintage, but this Carrera Chronograph always warrants a wrist check when it crosses my desk — it just looks that good.
Regardless, both the awards and the watches at this year’s 67th Grammy Awards were on point. Honestly, I can’t complain.
