Here’s What We Learned From Reading Drake’s Star Chart
Ever since Drake announced his next album Scorpion dropping in June, the internet has been abuzz with theories about what the name might mean. The most obvious answer is that scorpions represent the astrological sign Scorpio, and being born October 24, Drake is a Scorpio himself.
To anyone who’s even a little bit interested in the weird world of astrology, Drake is very much a Scorpio. Scorpios are known to be incredibly ambitious and charismatic and are able to steal the limelight if that’s what they desire. When they know what they want, they can be incredibly focused in order to achieve their goals. On the flipside, they can also get incredibly jealous and possessive, don’t always trust people, resent those who dare mistreat or criticize them, and aren’t afraid to manipulate people to get what they want… but more on that later.
With Scorpion slated for a June release, we thought now is as good a time as ever to dive into Drake’s astrological birth chart. Although it’s not the first time he’s casually mentioned the fact that he’s a Scorpio (“A Scorpio’s Mind” from his first official mixtape Room for Improvement, anyone?), you will soon find out that Drake is one of the most Scorpio Scorpios to ever Scorpio.
Sun in Scorpio, Moon in Cancer
Your sun sign is quite simply based on the date you were born - nothing else. Drake was born on October 24, 1986, making him a Scorpio. All astrological signs fall under four elements – Water, Fire, Air, and Earth, and Scorpio is a water sign. Water signs are generally very in tune to the emotional world of themselves and others. However, as a fixed water sign, Scorpios have a particular reputation for being powerful in their ability to read the emotions of others and are ruled by desire in general.
Your moon sign represents your inner mood and emotional world. Drake’s moon is in Cancer, another water sign, and arguably the sign with the most emotional intuition. It’s no secret that Drake is incredibly in tune with his emotions, and with both his sun and moon in water signs, he’s more or less completely driven by his feelings, and is poetic and romantic at heart. Cancers also really love being at home and hold their family close to them, especially their mothers. Ergo, the most moon in Cancer thing Drake has ever rapped is probably “I only love my bed and my momma, I'm sorry,” from “God’s Plan".
This particular Scorpio Sun / Cancer Moon combination has been summarized by the phrase “attractive radiance.” Drake has never had a problem with self-confidence, and always seems to know exactly what he’s doing and incisively who he is. His Scorpio nature gives him a bit of a mysterious nature that tends to attract people - whether it’s musical collaborators, members of the OVO crew, or potential friends and lovers. He’s incredible faithful unless you do something to betray him.
Drake is held in high regard by many people, and luck also seems to follow him. Think of how insanely successful his surprise EP Scary Hours was, how "Nice For What" instantly blew up, and how with the release of each mixtape, he seems to break his own previous streaming records.
His two water signs also make him incredibly selfless – the most recent example of this would be his “God’s Plan” video, wherein Drake gave away the music video’s $999,631.90 budget to people in Miami.
In brief, Drake’s winning combination of emotional sensitivity and confidence makes him succeed at just about everything he puts his mind to.
Rising Sign / Ascendant in Leo
Your rising sign is often thought of as the mask you wear when you’re meeting others, your general impression on people, and your spontaneous reactions.
With his charismatic personality, the fire sign of Leo makes sense for Drake. When we analyzed Tyler, the Creator’s birth chart, we also found that his rising sign is Leo. Leo risings are magnetic, loud, pay a great deal of attention to their personal appearance, and are acutely self-aware. Like Tyler, Drake often indulges in rash decisions and excesses, with the occasional temper tantrum thrown in, but despite all this they have a lot of staying power.
They’re also known to be quite confident, and rightfully so. Being Scorpio dominant, which is a sign that loves revenge, the addition of firey Leo makes Drizzy even more inclined to clap back and publicly assert his dominance. There are endless examples of this - one that stands out is definitely his feud with Meek Mill, which resulted in Drake’s “Charged Up”.
Drake had quite the fire-filled 2015 in general, as shortly after “Charged Up”, he proceeded to drop his If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late mixtape, probably his hardest collection of tracks to date. To refresh your memory, rumor has it that Drake dropped the mixtape after being fed up with his label Cash Money Records, and wanted to dip out of his record deal. He also reportedly takes shots at Diddy, Tyga, and Kendrick Lamar.
Mercury in Scorpio
Drake’s Mercury is in Pisces, and Mercury rules communication. That’s why astrology freaks are always panicking when “Mercury is in retrograde” – communication can get supremely fucked up when Mercury occasionally decides to slow down and spin backwards as it’s orbiting the earth.
Here we see even more Scorpio emerge in Drake’s chart. Those with Mercury in Scorpio love to communicate, and tend to be nervous, swift, curious, quick-witted, and cerebral. Mercury Scorpios tend to act on the impulses of their emotions, and intellectualize situations they find themselves in without necessarily considering the human impact of their actions.
Scorpios are known to be one of the twelve signs most interested in revenge - and as a Mercury Scorpio Drake is not afraid to publicly flex or get petty to fire back at those who have wronged him. This is best evidenced on his @champagnepapi Instagram account, full of endless flexing, and in much of his discography.
Sonic highlights of Drake’s Scorpio revenge-seeking ways include “Summer Sixteen” where he very plainly states he’s “been looking for revenge” as well as “Tuscan Leather” where he simultaneously flexes on his abilities (“I could go an hour on this beat”) and fires shots at his rap peers (“Bench players talkin' like starters”).
Venus in Scorpio
Venus is the planet that rules everything to do with love and romance. Drake’s Venus is in Scorpio, meaning he primarily aims to please. His look, charm and seduction are integral to who he is, and always present in his behaviour. In general, Scorpios fall for people hard and fast, but then get ruthless if it doesn’t work out with their lover, often cutting them off completely.
Physical attraction is important to a Scorpio Venus, sure, but nothing’s going to go down if they don’t feel a strong emotional connection to someone or if that person doesn’t exude sympathy and warmth, even in the early stages. He’s also insanely artistic, but his desire for pleasure, beauty, and sensuality is often to the detriment of efficiency and logic.
Examples from Drake’s discography include “Come Thru” from 2013's Nothing Was the Same. Although it reeks of the Drake thirst we have come to know and love, it also oozes confidence - “I can still get you wet, and I can still make you laugh.” He also loves to whine about what he bought women and how they’ve proceeded to betray him, which is Scorpio af, case in point “Child’s Play” on 2016's Views. The intro makes complaints about unfaithful girlfriends sleeping with basketball players, with Drake later admitting, “I give Chanel out like a hug, I know.”
Drake’s Venus is Scorpio makes him a Trine Scorpio, meaning that he has at least three instances of Scorpio in his chart (again, Scorpio af). Interestingly, we previously discovered that Tyler, the Creator is a Trine Pisces, so both rappers are very water-dominant and connected to their emotions, albeit in slightly different ways.
So what did we learn from this astrological investigation into Drake? He really, truly is a prime example of a Scorpio. He's relentlessly ambitious and confident, and his drive and passion is magnetic - we all know he's got charisma for days. If you cross him, best believe he'll be up in the studio working on his revenge track, or in the gym working on his revenge bod. With his Moon in Cancer, his interior life is all about deep emotions and close connections to home and the people he loves. His Leo Rising gives him a firey edge, which often leads to rash decisions, but also contributes to his unshakeable belief in himself. The stars truly aligned to bring forth Aubrey Drake Graham to the universe - an unstoppable force to be reckoned with, and someone who has undeniably changed the rap game. If his star chart is anything to go by, Drake's Scorpion is set to be one of his best records yet, especially if he harnesses his Trine Scorpio powers.
