Elon Musk Reveals The Boring Company's Underground LA Tunnel
Last night Elon Musk and his Boring Company unveiled their much-anticipated underground transportation tunnel in Los Angeles, designed to alleviate the area's "soul-destroying" traffic congestion, to quote Musk. The current test tunnel runs 1.14 miles from a SpaceX parking lot into the city of Hawthorne, as last night's presentation saw a Tesla Model X make its way through the underground passage.
Musk and The Boring Company are referring to the tunnel as the "Loop." To utilize the Loop, individuals will be forced to outfit their fully electric, autonomous vehicles with specialized wheels that will guide them along the tracks in the passageway. Anyone without an electric, autonomous ride can take advantage of cars that will continually make their way around the loop for passenger transport.
According to The Boring Company, each tunnel is expected to eventually support 4,000 cars per hour, which equates to roughly 16,000 passengers if each vehicle is nearly full.
Musk and his company still have a ways to go to reach their goal, however. Last night's test run only reached speeds of up to 50 mph, far from the desired 150 mph, and it was an admittedly bumpy ride at times.
“The bumpiness will not be there down the road,” Musk told The LA Times. “It will be as smooth as glass. This is just a prototype. That’s why it's just a little rough around the edges.”
Musk's goal is to complete the entire LA tunnel system by 2028 when the city is scheduled to host the Olympics. Nonetheless, hit us with your early thoughts on The Boring Company's innovative transportation system.
