Meet Erin Mitchell:
Winner of the Jack Honey Art, Beats & Lyrics
‘Artist Call’ Spotlight
With the previous year’s challenges still lingering across the country, we’re proud to continue our partnership with Jack Honey Art, Beats and Lyrics as we bring the traveling art exhibition into the digital realm for the first time.
The power for art to inspire and express ideas beyond the written word is crucial, which is why we caught up with interdisciplinary artist Erin Mitchell as she works on her latest mural for the upcoming Jack Honey Art, Beats & Lyrics 2021 show. As the winner of Jack Honey Art, Beats & Lyrics’ Artist Call contest, the art wall she creates will tour with the show nationally throughout the year (when it’s safe to do so).
Mitchell earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and shot to international acclaim in 2018 when her KINSHIP series was featured in the hit TV show Empire. Michell’s oeuvre contains paintings and photography largely inspired by the iconography of Black womanhood. Scroll through to discover more of her work, her relationship with Jack Honey Art, Beats & Lyrics, advice for young artists, and more.

Erin has a few wise words for those facing challenging circumstances:
“My advice for young emerging artists is to be persistent. We're all in a situation where we don't know what's gonna happen in the world, but having that fire in you is gonna serve its purpose.”
