Are Frank Ocean & BMW Teasing a 'Nostalgia Ultra' Re-Release?
The day is almost upon us. After six long years, Frank Ocean is finally making his way back to the stage, gracing Indio, California, with a live performance. Coachella, the valley of dreams, will scratch our collective nostalgia itch, and if BMW's involvement is anything to go by, Nostalgia Ultra might be on its way back, too.
We've all got music-era bias, right? For me, 2010-16 is pretty much unbeatable.
During that time, we got Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Watch the Throne, and Cruel Summer; Drake's Thank Me Later, Take Care, Nothing Was The Same, and Views, and most importantly, Frank Ocean's Nostalgia Ultra (Channel Orange and Blonde, too).
It's a given that music-fuelled nostalgia would keep me locked to my school years, but come on, we got some incredible albums in those six years.
For many, it was The Lonny Breaux Collection that kickstarted their Frank Ocean obsession; for most, it was Nostalgia Ultra and his efforts on the Odd Future tapes.
Unfortunately, aside from a couple of singles, including "Novacane," due to a series of issues with sample clearing, most notably, The Eagles' huge beef concerning "American Wedding," fans remain deprived of ultra nostalgia – via major streaming platforms, that is.
As we gear up for Frank's Coachella show, which is a mere four days away, BMW has been at the forefront of marketing the performance.
While a car company promoting a live music performance is certainly unorthodox, it's BMW's classic E30 M3 that sits on the cover of Nostalgia Ultra.
Iconic, to say the least, the car and its stunning orange finish have become synonymous with Ocean's catalog; and even more so, the album.
BMW's involvement, which includes wrapping an E30 M3 orange as part of the promotional run, has led many fans to speculate that Nostalgia Ultra could finally be coming to streaming in full.
While unlikely that Frank's car enthusiasm has led BMW to convince The Eagles wanted to clear the "American Wedding" sample (money talks, after all), it's not completely out of the realm of possibility.
Only time will tell, and we haven't got long to go – a new album, Nostalgia; whatever Franky O has to offer, we'll take it all.
In the meantime, you can get familiar with some of the tracks that Frank's Coachella set list will include, thanks to some fans local to the area. Alternatively, you can just enjoy the memes!
