Highsnobiety’s Fitmas Calendar is a recap of 2019’s best celebrity style. Throughout the month of December, we’ll be looking back at one fit each day, diving deeper into why it worked and how you can achieve the look.

Who: Frank Ocean

The outfit he's wearing: Gray tailored suit, gray beanie, tartan tie, and black Dr. Martens

Where and when: Manhattan, New York City, April 2019

Editor’s notes: Frank Ocean's style is refreshing for an artist of his caliber. It feels genuine and is reinforced by the fact his music regularly incorporates lyrics about clothing.

Typically, Ocean's style is a mix of under-the-radar streetwear with a few high-end pieces thrown in — see his Prada "security guard" ensemble at this year's 2019 Met Gala. Here, however, he's riding the casual formalwear wave with a perfectly fitted gray suit — note the immaculate break at the ankle of the pants — which has been leveled out with a simple gray beanie and a pair of classic Dr. Martens.

The fit recalls the time Ocean pulled up in a suit, tie, and a pair of the Cactus Flea Market x Nike Air Vapormax sneakers. The kicks would make our best sneakers of 2019 end of year list, but it was the casual necktie that really made the outfit pop.

Ties have become a more common sight on the runway this year and among streetwear-adjacent style icons such as Tyler, the Creator. You can check out some of our favorite options from the likes of Yohji Yamamoto, Dries Van Noten, and Saint Laurent here.

If you want to recreate the look yourself, you can do so with some Dr. Martens and one of the ties below.
