HBO aired the final episode of Game of Thrones this past Sunday, leaving some fans of the celebrated TV series saddened and others outraged, even to the point of starting a petition to have the last season remade. In light of GoT's controversial ending, author George R. R. Martin took to his website to address the series as well as his upcoming books.

"It is hard to believe it is over, if truth be told," he said. "It has been a wild ride, to say the least."

HBO's Game of Thrones was based on Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels, as the author still has the last two books to pen. "Last night was an ending, but it was also a beginning," he stated in response to the series finale. He then went on to speak about how the story will conclude in his books.

"How will it all end? I hear people asking," the writer added. "The same ending as the show? Different? Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. I am working in a very different medium than [co-creators] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss], never forget. There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books."

And while fans of Game of Thrones may find other characters in Martin's books, he didn't rule out the possibility of similar plot details between the show and his novels.

"Book or show, which will be the 'real' ending? It's a silly question," he concluded. "How about this? I'll write it. You read it. Then everyone can make up their own mind, and argue about it on the internet."

Martin admits that the final two books in the series, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, are late, but he has yet to disclose estimated release dates.
