Denim, Graffiti & Raves: Gerrit Jacob Brings ‘90s Berlin Back to Life
For your daily dose of fashion nostalgia, Berlin-based designer Gerrit Jacob and global film platform MUBI team up to celebrate the wild, transformative spirit of 1990s Berlin through a limited-edition capsule collection. A trip down memory lane to a time that birthed the techno capital’s reputation for having a non-stop party scene unlike any other.
Gerrit Jacob x MUBI: An Ode to ’90s Berlin Through Fashion and Film, is a collection inspired by MUBI’s film series Reclaiming Spaces: Berlin, the ‘90s and launches in conjunction with Dream On – Berlin, the ‘90s an exhibition at the gallery C/O Berlin.
The collection is a love letter to ‘90s Berlin. It features a denim jacket, jeans, and a T-shirt decorated with hand-drawn graffiti-like scribbles, recalling the walls of Berlin’s infamous underground clubs and outdoor public spaces. Jacob’s bags, meanwhile, are stenciled and hand-sprayed, evoking the energy of rave flyers that once blanketed the city and an homage to the DIY ethos that shaped Berlin’s street art culture.
The campaign also pays homage to Berlin’s raw, unpolished charm, capturing scenes on iconic city streets like the Warschauer Brücke.
With this collection, presented on November 16 through an event at C/O Berlin, Gerrit Jacob and MUBI have distilled elements of Berlin’s chaotic yet hopeful post-Wall identity. In the ‘90s, the German capital was a breeding ground for underground cultures that thrived in its many abandoned spaces.
At a time when surging rent prices are pushing locals and longstanding nightclubs out of the city, it’s a reminder of Berlin’s authentically rebellious ‘90s years.
