Is that Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen strolling through Los Angeles with that gracefully billowing summer coat? Neither! It's Hilary Duff, who's been slyly upping her style game over the past few years, demonstrating a subtle mastery of — gulp — quiet luxury that's very much Olsen-worthy.

We should've been paying attention earlier, 'cuz Lizzie McGuire has long been stepping her wardrobe up to the point that it's worth celebrating.

Seen on an early July afternoon walk with husband Matthew Koma, Duff epitomized — sigh — quiet luxury by elevating her well-proportioned layers with some bougie bits, including sunnies and strappy fisherman sandals from Prada and a Chanel bucket-style bag.

It's weird that fisherman sandals have proven divisive online — they're pretty versatile and add necessary visual interest, crucial in tying together an otherwise simple look.

This isn't Hilary Duff's first casually excellent look, either, not by a long shot.

Especially when the temperature cools down, Duff's been known to nail Olsen-tier outfits left and right.

As for why every mention of "quiet luxury" elicits a literary eyeroll, it's just that I feel as through the phrase has nearly lost all meaning amidst the deluge of memes and inaccurate useage.

At its best, quiet luxury ought to refer to outfits that subtly demonstrate good taste through bougie (or at least bougie-looking) clothes and/or accessories. It ain't the boring uniforms worn by the Succession nepo babies or Silicon Valley tech overlords but an intentional balance of taste and cash.

The Olsen Twins have obviously always done stealth wealth better than anyone else. In fact, you can typically count anyone wearing their clothing line, The Row, as inherent participants of the quiet luxury movement (same for most folks wearing Phoebe Philo-era Céline, Bottega Veneta, Loro Piana, and all the rest).

Anyways, back to what I like about Hilary Duff's look and, really, many of her past looks.

Duff's personal style feels both idiosyncratic and aspirationally effortless, an impressive combo embodied by only the most confident dressers.

She can do oversized bombers one day, ankle-length skirts the next. No need to go for the obvious mom jean and loafer combo, no use for the played-out oversized blazer.

Instead, Duff finds pieces that feel very her without making a big deal about it. Everything's worn well and occasionally zhooshed up by luxury accessories in a way that's tasteful, not tacky. That's very Olsen Twins and very quiet luxury, in a good way.
