With Candy & Cherries, Jil Sander FW23 Was a Unexpected Treat
Jil Sander Fall/Winter 2023 was the cherry on top, literally and figuratively.
The Milan-based label presented its latest runway presentation during Milan's bustling fashion week, sending tops with cherry and striped candies down the runway — quite the unexpected treat, to say the least.
For FW23, Lucie and Luke Meier, the husband and wife duo sharing the creative director chair, continue to focus on individual style while embracing the now.
And like FW22 — recall the crochet hats and Sagittarius-labeled outerwear — the label is still going full on Gen Z, as Highsnobiety's Alexandra Pauly put it last season.
Motorcore hit the catwalk, materializing as leather ensembles marked with Jil Sander branding realized in a racing-style font.
TikTok hashtags like #racingoutfit and #motofashion racked up over 200 billion views combined (and Gucci and Palace dropping their own motorcycle probably only advanced the trend). In short, the urge to dress like you're going to an F1 event only to be attending a friend's birthday party is stronger than ever these days.
Checkerboard mingled with zebra prints. Zippers galore made for edgy surprises on outerwear and trousers. Then, there was that monochromatic pink 'fit, which needs no further introduction nor explanation (know: it was too good).
Footwear is chunky and bold as ever with their hefty lug soles and even inflated bumpers, coated in gleaming metallics to pastel, matte leather. And the brand even embraced the fluff, resulting in furry layers and fuzzy dresses.
Jil Sander's silhouettes are still roomy and flowy, evident in seasons past. Layering is still masterful as ever, as well as the collection's moments of signature minimalism.
The echoes of the label's DNA remain — just with a little taste of what the Meier couple calls "age we are in" today.
