Meet the Designer Behind Julia Fox's Dominatrix Horse 'Fit
“Escapism, futurism and craftsmanship,” says THE UNCOMMONIST — the unconventional designer behind Julia Fox’s viral leather dominatrix horse ‘fit — when I ask them to describe their work in a sentence.
“My work is an extension of myself. I don't like following the rules, they exist to be broken. My inspiration is drawn from everyday life and nature,” they added.
For those not au fait, let me lay down some context for you: on February 13, 2023, Julia Fox was spotted in New York wearing what can only be described as an all-leather horse-inspired outfit, equipped with butt cheek holes and a full-length tail.
Naturally, the look garnered a fair bit of online attention, the latest in a long list of recent head-turning Julia Fox 'fits. For THE UNCOMMONIST — which is less than one year old — they couldn't be happier.
“This look was initially inspired by Centuar, the mythical creature,” they explain of the thoughts behind the look. “It's half man and half horse, which to me represents beauty and strength — both of what Julia radiates entirely."
“Julia [Fox] is THE UNCOMMONIST,” they continue. “She makes her own rules then breaks them. If it weren’t for people like Julia I wouldn’t be here. I'm thrilled. In the end she doesn’t need a knight in shining armor, she can save herself. She's not only Josh Safdie’s muse, she’s mine too.”
Going solely by the name THE UNCOMMONIST, the UK-based creative has been quietly going about its business, with (ironically) the loudest designs. Since its inception midway through last year, the label has drawn inspiration from the weird and the wonderful of everyday life, all of which is driven by a burning desire to tell a story and forge a path of its own.
In short: it's playing by its own rules. Clearly.
The brand can also boast the likes of Michèle Lamy and Lisa Roddy as famous wearers of THE UNCOMMONIST (the former seen above wearing a crazy horn headpiece), although it’s safe to say it's Fox’s stamp of approval that's really putting the brand on the map.
Of course, we aren't expecting an all-leather dominatrix horse 'fit to be a common sight on the streets of New York, but in a world full of codes and expectations, THE UNCOMMONIST is doing things its own way.
And, for a label less than 12 months into its existence, it’s doing a pretty good job so far — even if it is a little wild.
