Kanye West’s ‘Yeezus’ Was Originally Titled ‘Thank God For Drugs’ Reveals Art Director
Kanye West's former art director, Joe Perez, has seemingly confirmed a longstanding rumor about Yeezus. Before Kanye gave himself to God, the rapper almost gave his 6th studio album the secular title Thank God for Drugs.
The former Donda art director, who worked with Kanye for several years on the cover art for Yeezus, The Life of Pablo, and Cruel Summer, is now sharing some of his design archives on Instagram. As pointed out by Genius, Perez recently shared an early concept for Kanye's 2013 album. It shows a clear CD case, similar to the final Yeezus album art, but with the title Thank God for Drugs sprawled across the front.
Perez also confirmed rumors that the concept featured artwork by George Condo and creative direction by Virgil Abloh.
In addition to the purported Thank God for Drugs cover art, Perez also shared a concept for the Yeezus supporting tour, which was at one point set to be called the "Till Death Do Us Part" tour.
