This Summer, We're Big on Big Shorts
Something that would have seemed incomprehensible just a few summers ago, we are witnessing the return of the cursed capri.
The debate on inseam lengths gets pretty heated around this time of year, both online and in our offices, and it's recently seen big and baggy shorts rise up the ranks to become a contender for the style of the summer.
And I'm not just talking about slightly below-the-knee inseams, these are proper John Cena-style shin slappers — some of which go so far down the leg that they're entering into 3/4 length territory.
The writing has been on the wall for long shorts ever since we started looking at Adam Sandler's fashion taste through a new lens. The actor embodies IDGAF style and no matter if he's on the red carpet or being papped running errands, you can expect to find the 56-year-old in a pair of massive shorts.
It's a style that largely contributed to the actor being the top trending celebrity style star for two years on the bounce, and people are taking note of the power of long shorts.
They've found themselves creeping into the wardrobes of celebrities who, unlike Sandler, actively put time into their look.
For example, A$AP Rocky pulled up to Pharrell's star-studded debut Louis Vuitton Men's show wearing a pair of monogrammed shorts from the brand that fell quite a bit below the knee — styled together with LV's headline-grabbing paw print footwear.
Plus, we've recently seen Amelia Gray Hamlin in long-length workwear shorts, Jaden Smith in a seriously big pair of jorts, and who can forget when R-Patz broke the internet with his callosal cargos.
A length of shorts that has been exclusively the domain of OG skaters and suburban dads for the longest time, high fashion houses have also been getting in on the fun.
The SS24 menswear shows have just come to an end and, just like with the previous spring/summer season, it saw a number of brands take their selection of shorts to literal new lengths. Givenchy, Gucci, and Kenzo are just some of the high-profile brands that recently presented legwear that reaches low down the shin.
No matter how much we keep on asking ourselves why Y2K is still happening, the ongoing trend seems to have managed to revive long shorts. We've picked out some of our favorite pairs for you to browse down below.
