LVMH Group Commits $11 Million to Combat Amazon Wildfires
Europe's richest person, Bernard Arnault has announced his LVMH group will contribute $11 million to the “collective effort” to assist in fighting wildfires currently decimating the Amazon rainforest.
The $11 million commitment has been compared against the group's $300 million contribution to the restoration of Notre Dame earlier this year.
Forbes reports that on August 26, the luxury group announced they would join the G7's aid initiative. According to The Guardian, the G7 countries have agreed to an immediate $20 million aid package to help Amazon countries fight the fires as well as a longer-term global initiative to protect the rainforest in the future.
As yet, it is unclear whether the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro will accept the aid.
The Leonardo DiCaprio-backed Earth Alliance has also committed $5 million to “focus critical resources for indigenous communities and other local partners working to protect the life-sustaining biodiversity of the Amazon against the surge of fires currently burning across the region.”
